Heating mat??

Can you tell me if i could use some slate under the hert mat, (inside the viv) just to stop the heat going downwards??
Thanks for your help.
Marg.

I am not sure if this will help, but what I do is get a small section of plexiglass (recently I have used rubber placemats) and stick the heat mat to it. I then elevate the tank a couple of inches and lay the heat mat underneath it. That way I can move it around if need be which is a lot easier for cleaning etc. (and you don't need to worry about making room for the cord).

If you do use a heat mat inside your viv you may want to take a couple of things into consideration:

1. It may be a problem if it gets wet. The glass (if that is what it is made of) could crack if it gets wet and it is heated. I would be careful of the mat itself getting wet too just because it is electric.

2. If you put it inside, you may want to cover it with something. slate may work, although I am not sure how well it conduct the heat. Whichever material you use to cover it, you should try to seal it (possible w/ aquarium silicon) because the snake may try to squeeze under it.

3. Make sure whichever way you decide to use it that the heat mat is regulated by a thermostat or rheostat monitored by a digital thermometer with a probe. Heat mats will easily get hot enough to burn your snake. Unregulated I have seen temperatures between 94-107 degrees Fahrenheit.
I currently use a rheostat, and even with it turned all the way down I need to elevate my tank a couple of inches off the ground where the mat is to keep a reasonable temperature.

I am not sure if that helps at all, what is prompting you to consider using slate? I am not sure that I understand your concern with the way the heat is transferring.

Hi Marg, if I remember correctly you have a heat mat inside the viv and it is controlled by a thermostat and checked with a digital thermometer :)

If you are worried about the heat going out the bottom of the tank, we have found that putting a thin piece of polystyrene under the tank will reflect the heat back in, although you may have to reset the thermostat, as it might change the amount of heat inside the viv :)

Hope that helps :)

Hi Coty,
I don't really have any concerns about it, but i haven't got anything under the heat mat, so the heat can go down as well as upwards to keep Rio warm, so have been thinking about putting something under the mat to stop that happening, my son in law uses slate for their lizards to bask on, so just thought it might work for me. If that isn't going to help, i will need to rethink, perhaps a wall tile, it has to be something that will stop the heat going downwards.
What is "plexiglass?? perhaps it is something you can get in the USA.
My snake never seems to burrow under the substrat, he is either in his hides or round & about the viv, never seen him underneath.
I have got a thermostat with a probe also a digital thermometer with a probe.
I think & hope your temperatures in the usa are higher than here in England, at the moment we have got temps of 67/68f degs mid day, so not very warm at the moment.
Thanks for your help.
Marg.
