ok so for the past month that i've had my snake ive been using a heat lamp. ive used heat lamps in the past with many of my other reptiles, some being snakes, and it always works out quite well for me. i make sure that i have two digital thermometers on both sides of the viv so that i can keep track of the temperatures. recently i decided to buy a heat pad since everyone suggests it. so i bought that and a rheostat to make sure it doesn't get too hot. ok now to my point...i hooked it up, put the dial on low and waited 30mins (said on the package to wait about 30mins for it to heat up) the temp went to around 76F on the warm side and wasn't changing so i turned the dial up to medium. i then kept checking on it and the temp raised to 88F and still rising so i decided to then unplug it and go back to the lamp since i didnt want to harm the snake. i tried the same thing over about two more times and it did the same thing. i don't know what to do:shrugs::shrugs: am i doing something wrong?? should i keep trying with the heat pad or just go back to the lamp?

there is a space between off and low it's not a setting but i will try turning the dial between it...ill post back what happens

How exactly do these thermostats work? Do they turn down the power output, or do they just turn on and off the heating pad?

How are you measuring the temps? Do you have a digital thermometer with a probe? If not, then you probably aren't getting the right readings.

Now, with the probe, where do you want the probe to be?

I am thinking for my new setup, I'm going with a UTH on one side, and a night cool like in the middle, just for a little light to view and a little extra heat - both connected to the thermostat.

okay its working fine now i have it on low and its at 83F for the warm side ill post bac if it gives me any more probs :) thanks

My understanding is the temp that reeally matters is inside the warm hide.
80*-84*F is ideal.
The belly heat is best as it helps them digest.
Our house is freezing so we do have a 50watt red light in a dome fixture over the middle of the tank to help raise the overall ambient temp.
There is a dimmer switch and we have it set to just on...seems to keep the cool side about 70*F and the warm side about 75*F and the warm hide at
82*F.

I have our probe on top of the substrate because that is where our guys sit.
We have the rainforest heat mat that gets to about 90*F max...no rheostat...but we have about 1&1/2" of aspen as a buffer to keep the correct temps.

Our corns burrow but they must instinctively know not to go down to the glass over the heat mat because they seem to burrow around it and on the cool side.
