Heating Question

So I know you are not supposed to use lamps with corn snakes but I am having a problem keeping my tanks warm enough on both ends without one! I have pads on both sides, one set to 85 and the other side set on 72! My question is does it matter what the "air" in the tank is temperature wise? As in do I only need to worry about the temps at the bottom of the viv?

Nicole

What is the ambient room temp? It might not be a problem.
If it is too cool, you may need to use a ceramic heat bulb to supplement heat.

Will the ceramic bulb not dry out the tank? That's what I'm mainly worried about, drying the tank out and making my snakes uncomfortable! I live in Maine and have a room that is downstairs away from our wood stove so it's pretty cool in here, like 66 or so

It can dry out the air, but if the ambient air is too cold to maintain the right temp for digestion with the heat pads, getting the proper heat is more important.
As long as the snake is hydrated, you shouldn't have trouble with shedding.
If there are any shedding problems, you can add a humid hide during the shed phase.
I have known people who have used just a heat bulb for their tank. Is it ideal? No, but it works for them.

Ok that's good to hear!! Bella has shed already and I did put a humid hide in while she was in Blue and her shed was successful so I guess I'll just keep doing that! Tessa hasn't gone into blue yet but I've only had her a few days!!
