heating question

Need some help once again (Thank God for this forum). Ok I am currently using a small (not sure of size) UTH to heat a 10 gallon aquarium for Charlie my 14" creamcicle. Today i placed the thermometer directly on the glass above the UTH and the temp was 97 F (its a good thermometer so the reading is correct). Is this too hot? The temp on the top of the substrate is 88 F
Should i hook the UTH up to a thermostat of some sort. And if so what ttemp should i get for the glass
I'm really concerned because tonight he's been burrowing above the UTH and i dont want him to get burned
Thanks for any help
cornsnakes rule

97 degrees is too high. I'd get something to regulate the temp so it won't get that high. The upper 80's is where you want the hot side to be.

yea but is that with substrate on top, or just the glass directly over the UTH? Because when you add substrate, it will cool it down. and you can keep adding more substrate to cool it down even more.

I'd say just the glass. If the snake needs to get warmer it will burrow under the substrate. If it burrows under it when it is 97 degrees and is directly on the 97 degree glass it could cause problems.

darkpbstar it depends if the snake can get under the UTH or directly on top of it. 86 is a better temp without substrate and enough substrate on top to lower this to about 83-83 deg f.

Hey cornman are these temps with the thermometer directly contacting the glass. :shrugs:

No i use a melomine wooden viv and thats the actualsubstrate temp. The heatmat temp is controled and is set at 90 and i use 1-1.5inches of asphen so the top if the substrate is eather 84 or 86 for the warm side floor temp.
heres a pic of the setup, with the heatmat under the bark

Okay...he said that is right on the glass...about 88 on top of the substrate...
I would place a piece of ceramic tile or flat stone in the tank on top of the area the UTH is under...be sure it is in direct contact with the glass and that the snake can't burrow under it...this will provide good heat without risking a burn.
You can also just add more substrate to get the substrate surface temp down a little more...most of mine are around 82-84 hotside on top of the substrate...no tiles...and I have never had a snake burned...but it CAN happen. Especially if you put a hide directly over the heater and the snake likes to burrow in the substrate inside the hide.

Thanks

Hey thanks for all the tips. I have this mini transformer so i can reduce the voltage reaching the UTH. I'm gonna do this especially since it's really warm now, I'm in Florida. It was much colder last week dropping into the 30's at night.
Well thanks again

I would have to guess Fahrenheit...as 30C is 86F..which is PLENTY warm...at least for me...I live in Chicago...we are getting 10 inches of snow today..

Thats right. I'm in north Fl and thats pretty cold for us. Right now it's like mid 70's, I'm loving it. This has been the best winter (knock on wood) for us in a long time. Sorry to hear about the 10" of snow coming your way. Maybe this can help :flames:

we had our snow on christmas eve/day/and through till the 28th.
I was going to say 30 c, you lucky so and so, but 30f is welcome to my world, with -4 c at night time at the min.

You need to move north and get that blood of yours thicker. Sixty and I'm wearing shorts and sweating. :flames:

You got that right Dand, I'm originally from south FL, but since I've moved up here to NC I wear shorts until it snows! People look at me like I'm certifiable. I just can't stand the heat anymore. It's 70 outside now and I'm po'd. It's supposed to be winter!!!

RIGHT!!!

I was out in a t-shirt last night, smoking a cigarette....and watching it SNOW.
Hell it was -25F for three days a week and a half ago.

35 feels like a heat wave.

let me get this straight, you have a uth ontop of wood, in that enclosure, cornman? how is this possible, is it safe? what uth are you using?
