i am new to this, and my first question is that i have read alot about the uth, and basically i have hot mixed reviews out of it, but i did get one. I put it on the outside under the tank, then i out a washcloth on the bottom and then covered with newspaper for substrate, is that ok, and i also have a day bulb thats a 50 watt, and a night basking bulb that is also 50 watt, my corn snake is in a 10 gallon aquarium, should i still get the rheostat to regulate the temp of the uth, or will putting the washcloth down be ok?plus am i supposed to have a tree or a branch or some sort for him/her to climb on?

As TheHate said, it's recommended that it's regulated. Now I'd figure that having both the heat lamp/day lamp and the UTH would be too much. The day lamp can bring the humidity down and making shedding difficult. If you use the search function at the top of the page, there are plenty of posts on the pros and cons of bulbs and UTHs as well as some cool tips and tricks on caring for your corn (humid hide, fimo clay hides, pictures, etc.) The search function is your friend.

BTW welcome to the board!

As long as the temps are correct, how you get there doesn't matter.

If the temp of the glass on the bottom of the tank is a steady 85 degrees, you're good to go. You have to measure it with a digital thermometer (the kind with a probe). If it's too hard to adjust the temp by moving the UTH (and it will be) get a rheostat at a hardware store for $8 or so. It's just a lamp dimmer switch.

Keep one side 85 degrees with the UTH and the other side room temperature. No need for heat lamps in my opinion.

Good luck!

i probably should have said this in the beginning, he is in my room which is in the basement, it's concrete walls so it gets colder down there

my heat lamp is only on at night, so if i get the uth at 85 is that to much heat? or would that be ok, since its only two heating sources on at once

A heat lamp shouldn't be left on all night. Snakes need a regular day/night cycle. How are you measuring your temps? Unless you keep your room at Arctic temps, a UTH should be sufficient, if you are measuring the temps correctly.

And you need to measure the temp right on the glass above the UTH, because your snake can get under the newspaper and under the washcloth if she wants to. They _love_ to burrow.

My smaller snakes love to climb in vines. I don't have great luck with the plasticy kind that stick on with suction cups- I like the six foot long more real-feeling ones (silk?) and I take that and bend it up and put it along the back wall, maybe held down by a climbing branch or water crock.

I think the more stuff there is for them to do, the more enriched their environment is, the better.
