I just bought my first cornsnake a few days ago. I haven't had her sexed but I call it a she as a reference. And she came into an all female household so if she were a he it'd be out of place. Anyways, her name is Lucy.

I'm a first time snake owner and was told that corns were a good beginner snake. Lucy I've noticed is more active at night and tends to hide most of the time but around 8 PM will come out and actively explore her tank. (she's being kept in a 29 gallon aquarium) Am having handling issues as she was not handled much in the petstore (obviously). She has not struck at me yet but goes into the position if I get too near her. According to the petstore she is a couple months old and is about 18 inches (45 cm) long. I'm trying to figure her coloring out but is predominantly a light pinkish orange with darker bands.

OK now I'm mad, my boyfriend just came by and when he picked her up she was fine. Crawled all over his hand and forearm smelling him and curling around his fingers like she was handled like that all the time. Do snakes develop preferances as to the sex of their handlers. (been in the horse biz for 17 years and I know they do...but I find it difficult to believe that snakes would) Anyways, y'all lemme know what you think.

You make me laugh. Which I need.
Your boyfriend, didn't hesintate and just scooped up your snake and handle him. (by the way, it's a boy Ha!). He did it right. If you show "fear" the snake will pick up on that and do it again. Hatchling will try to almost alway crawl away and up your arm.
But first did you let the snake settle in a bit (no handle) for three to five day when you got him. Hatchling get stress and then are hard to feed.
Another hint, give him a few days after the "settle in" time to feed. And try to feed at night in a small container in a dim room. With a tank that big use at least four hides. Just to let you know corn are nocturnal. They party all night long.
Good Luck

Hey wait, how do you know its a boy? And yeah I waited 3 days before bothering her and was gonna give her a few more before trying to feed her. She has several hides and uses all of them.

Yes, Lennycorn's right, don't hesitate or show fear. Body language even in humans accounts for more than 90% of what's called communication! Also, what might cause a nervous, er, hostile reaction in cornsnakes could be from colognes or perfume.

Are you going to try to feed a (f/t) frozed/thaw pinky. If so, after warming it up (in a zip-lock bag ) in a cup of warm water try slicing the back a little, to intice the snake. Call your boyfriend.
By the way.....
Girl snakes like the scent of women and boy snakes like the scent of men. You just happen to have a gay snake. Ha! Ha! Ha! :sidestep:

Have fun, I am. :grin01:

Well if he's gay then I can still call him Lucy. I haven't fed her yet I was gonna give it a try tonight. I have a reptile carrier with a lockable top. Was gonna stick her in there, lock the top and go hang out and watch TV for a while. I'm not really worried about it. She's been behaving pretty much by the books so far, definately nocturnal. She comes out at night and has been fascinating to watch. I turn on a dim light in her tank and she just cruises around her tank climbing everything by turn.

PS maybe I was hesitating without realizing it but I don't wear perfume (am too much of a tomboy and it makes me sneeze)

Yeah it's cool watching them cruising around. Good luck with HER.
Hope you don't mind me have some fun.

Course not, all newbies git ribbed. I expected it. Lucy's doing great, first feed was today. Chowed right down. Either she's really healthy or I'm a natural. I'm leanin towards the former. :)

Well that great news. Sometime I think newbies tend to rush the feeding part. Not knowing to first calm the snake down. But it sounds like your off to a good start. Good luck with Luke. hehe.
Keep us posted.
Lennycorn.
