HELLO EVERYONE!!!

Noticed in the pictures that your thermometers were at the very top of your tank. If they are reading 86 up there and your room temp is around 68 then you are probably putting out a surface/glass temp of well over 100. Have you plugged the UTH into the cord that the dimmer is on?

No the dimmer is built into the cord for the lamp I cant use it for the UTH

100+ is not good where does the thermostat need to be?

You have me scared now

OK guys need help, I put the electronic reader, it was at 78 on the high :crying::headbang:

So I changed to 100wat bulb I bought last night just in case!!

So I put it in and now it is steadily climbing so hoping it is going to stop somewhere around 84.... on the high side

I feel so bad for fable :awcrap:

He seems to be a trooper though so I think he will be ok.... Hoping so anyway

Update when I have one, he seems to be in a good mood he is truckin around untill I changed out the lights which took about 30 seconds.

now he is sitting still

ok so it is at a steady 80.2 degrees that is to cold right so how do I make it warmer LOL just move the light a little closer?

Are you sitting the thermometer on the glass directly where the uth is? What is the watts on the UTH? If it has a dimmer attached why don't you turn it up a little? The back of the tank on the inside glass will tell you a lower temp. then the ground actually is. You need the temp. on the bottom of tank not the side since its the bottom the snake crawls on. Once you get the UTH at the correct temp. you can get rid of the lamp the snake doesn't need it they digest using belly heat and will be fine with just that.

Ok this is how its set up.

This is the heat LAMP not the UTH (I dont have a dimmer for the UTH the dimmer for my heat lamp is built into the cord so I can not use it on my UTH)

I have a electronic thermometer on the side of the tank about 2 inches above the ground.

Where should I put the electric thermometer?

Here are pics kind of hard to explain and it was at 80.5 when I checked it

put the thermometer probe over top of the UTH on the glass. That is how you get a correct reading. Move the shavings some corns go under shavings to hide so you want to be as close to the UTH as the snake is they are on the ground not 2 in. above.

Ok well one, i am not using the UTH yet just the lamp.

Also since the UTH is on the bottom of the tank are you saying I need to put the prob directly over top of it? (on the inside of the tank)

yes directly over top on the inside. If you can get a lamp dimmer for the UTH it works just as well as a rheostat but is cheaper. You plug the lamp dimmer into UTH then plug into outlet. Have the probe sit on inside glass above UTH and then use the dimmer to get the temp to the correct temp. once reached then get rid of lamp and you are set. Until you get the dimmer for UTH then I guess the way you have it is ok. You should wait & see what others think with experience with lamps I don't use them I use UTH.

Home depot sells dimmers for about 10 bucks. One like this works great.

So here is what you will need ..

1. UTH
2. A dimmer or a thermostat or a reostat to control the temp. of the UTH
3. A thermometer with a probe.

This is what you need to do...

1. Plug the UTH into the dimmer (or the thermostat or the reostat) then plug that into the receptacle

2. Place the probe directly over the center of the UTH, inside the tank (directly on the glass). I use sticky tack to keep it in place. Tape in not recommended...you could also silicone it onto the glass but make sure it is completely dry and cured before placing you corn in the tank.

3. Now fiddle around until you get the heat at the perfect setting...80-84f is ideal...a bit higher is okay but you don't want to get over 88 or 89F and not for any real length of time.

4. There ...all set. Your cool side you can pretty much leave. Just provide hides on both sides and one in the middle (kind of half on the UTH and half off) to give your corn plenty of places to hide or burrow.

I hope this helped you. :)

yes that helped a lot I would like to go get a dimmer but I am snowed in LOL!!!

So I can pretty much not worry about the lamps once I get the UTH set up.

Pretty cool

do exactly this. All the lamp stuff was even getting me confused. You dont need to overspend. They require very basic needs. I've only been keeping for about 4 months but my corn has been soo easy to care for. Simple: Heat, Food, and hides. When I first read the post I saw $200 and got a little worried that someone was ripping you off. The only way that much should be spent is if it is on a top notch thermostat, such as a herpstat or helix. My setup is simple: 16qt sterilite tub, probed thermometer, 2 hides (half log and tp roll), water dish, and a Herpstat (amazing thermostat set it and forget it). Before the herpstat I used a dimmer which did the job for the time being and only cost $10 from lowes. From everything I read corns need belly heat for digestion so a UTH is almost always better than a lamp. So just toss the lamp and get a $10 dimmer and use the UTH. I'm new at this too but my corn is doing great and eats like a champ so any questions just ask.:wavey:

ok guys finally got my retostat or w/e its called LOL

Now i have some questions if anyone can answer some what quickly

we have him out playing now

I hooked up the UTH the retostat thing has a thermometer and I have a electronic one as well I put the retostat at 83-84 and they are both reading 83-84 HOWEVER when I put my hand in the tank it does not feel 80 degrees

I even touched the tank pad, and it does not feel hot at all kind of warmish

so please any advice I am starting to love our snake (was my gf's but now ours LOL)

so any replies would be great I still have a heat lamp I dont have it hooked up with the UTH.

So in collusion its the UTH with the retostat at 84-85 does not feel that warm

they are directly touching the pad (through the glass) however the box says not to let it touch the direct heat?

also I want to straighten those wires plan on doing it tomorrow when we have him out to play how can I do this I saw hot glue is that really ok?

Looks good to me. Remember that your body is 98 degrees so you don't want it to feel warm because that would mean its over body temperature(Hope I worded that right). Great job on the viv. Sure you'll have a happy little guy.

sorry another question or two

One the retostat is supposed to turn off the heat completely when it gets to a certain degree right like 84 then kick back on when it goes down some? This is what mine is doing just making sure that this is the case and is ok.

Also I feel 0 heat coming from it but I think thats because it is turned off momentarily, I have those two sticky thermometers on the tank which I know are air and they are reading about 68-72 not sure kind of hard to read.

how do i know if he is to cold?

Also anyway I can donate to this site, I would be sooooooo lost without you guys

yes that type of rheo. turns off when temp. is reached(I personally have this type hooked to 2 of my tanks)If its 72 on 1 side & 83 on the other he should be fine. They thermo regulate so if he gets cold he can go to the warm end. Mine is typically at the same temp. on cool end and my baby spends more time on cool end then warm end unless digesting.
