Hello from a couple new corn snake owners!

I have been lurking for a couple weeks and finally registered last week. My wife and I are new owners of a corn snake. I have been looking for something I wanted for my birthday, tarantulas were first on my list but the wife said NO...and really meant it.

I happened to be on another forum and a thread was started about good starter snakes. Most everyone said corns made the best starter snakes. So I started my research. I also looked into kings, hognose, ball pythons and milks. Hands down, corns seemed like the perfect fit for me.

After doing all my research, it didn't take much to convince my wife since I could answer all the questions off the top of my head. The following weekend we went to a reptile show and then decided we were serious and went out to get one.

Also, those pics were taken the first day we got our corn (Skittles). We have made some changes to the viv per advice on here and other forums (see picture attached below). We will get some new pics after he's all settled. Giving Skittles that week or so to get use to his viv before we handle (VERY HARD).

We also have an UTH and a temp control. I have not installed the UTH yet because I was going to wait for Skittles first feeding so I can also get the aspen bedding in. I don't care for the bark. Temps are monitored though and good.

My wife has also registered, hopefully she will participate. She's brandi221 or something like that. The pic below is her holding Skittles when we brought him home.

Skittles is lovely! The viv probably needs more hides for a little snake in a big viv, but that's a quibble. Welcome to your new addiction! Personally I don't like tarantulas either (all that hair!) so I'm with your wife -- snakes are great.
 
Thank you guys! Tomorrow we're going to try feeding Skittles again. The place we got him said that Sundays are his feeding days. We tried last Sunday but we were unsuccessful, probably all the stress of the new home.
 
Great waiting for him to get adjusted before feeding. He's a beautiful little normal. I would advise once you get him eating to feed every 5 days not once every 7. Goodluck with your baby.

I may just do that. I had stopped my research on them once I found that there was no way my wife would let me keep one. I do have a couple questions I never looked up.

Five sounds good. I just hope he'll eat tomorrow. It will be ten days since his last feeding. I believe I'm going to try the "leave it in the cage on a paper towel" suggestion, in the evening. I wanted to feed in a separate tub, but I want him to be as stress free as possible right now.
 
Welcome, what a cute little one you have and fun name too:D Love the paper towel or toilet paper roll in there (mine love those too. I'm a newbie also, so idk but the bark looks a little big and bulky for a baby to burrow in? I have aspen shavings for my babies. Just a thought. Glad your wife is happy to be involved, my boyfriend and I love having ours. Congrats on the new addition.

You can always switch to tub feeding later when Skittles is well-established.

He burrows in it just fine, impossible to find him actually! The bark came with the kit we bought, I already bought some replacement aspen, just waiting for the right time to replace it. The bark also leaves a residue on my fingers. Found this out when I was trying to find him the other day to make sure he was OK.

I do have a question, and I'm not trying to question the great wisdom that I have read but why are you suppose to wait five days to try and feed a corn if it rejects food? Can they keep traumatic experiences in their head for that long or what? I understand if they regurg, I understand that it takes that amount of time to rebuild stomach fluid or whatever. But why so long if they just don't decide to eat?

I just want to learn why...I'm not trying to be argumentative and I will do what ever you guys say is best.
 
I's sorry but no one is going to talk me into owning a spider... I'm not going to knock anyone for owning one, but I never will. Yah it's my first time owning any kind of reptile but i fell in LOVE with skittles and also thought of his name hes so friendly hes just awesome!

I'm not 100% sure on this one, either, so if I'm wrong someone can feel free to correct me.
To try feeding too close together can be stressful for one thing & might contribute to a snake not eating. Also, you are right, a snake can become "conditioned" not to accept a prey item in that way.

Thank you for your input. I was reading the thread earlier about snakes memory, but it didn't really cover this.
