Hello from a first time snake owner, but a long time snake lover!

I've considered aspen bedding since you first commented on my substrate, it prompted me to search online to see if there's anything better. :) I've got to say that aspen looks better than newspaper and similar things, although I suppose it may not be quite as cheap. I'm not entirely sure where to get it from here in Norwich, none of the shops I've been in seem to supply it, but I suppose at worst I could look online for some.
 
Thanks to everyone else's warm welcomes, this sort of thing makes me glad I joined. :)

Also I want to add that soon I'm going away just for a few days, from the 4th June until the evening of the 6th for a short holiday. :D If my boyfriend's feeling nice I may be able to use his laptop, but otherwise I'll be sure to get back to everyone who comments asap.

Do you have a walmart near you? If you do, go to the pet section, and there is aspen bedding in the rodent section. Its good as long as your sure it says "ASPEN BEDDING" it also says its good for other animals (including reptiles) thats wheere i get mine and its 3 bucks for a lot (havent payed attention to how much but it gives my 20 gallon long tank 2 or more inches)

Yes, it is. Amel was the first morph EVER. It's a Mendelian recessive, and somebody who studied cornsnakes bred the first captive amels, Dr Bechtel (I am not sure I got the spelling right) in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

Hello everyone, I'm back from holiday! :D I had a great time, me and my boyfriend went to Colchester zoo for a day which was fantastic, and I even made a friend there!

This is the zoo's albino burmese python, Custard. This guy was on show for a little while as the keeper had a chat about him and then invited people up to have a stroke of his scales. I was patient and let the children and any curious parents go first, and once they left I stepped up to have my turn, and was lucky enough to be invited by the keeper to hold Custard for a little while. According to my plan, of course. :p

You'll have to excuse my goofy smile, Custard was rather heavy and the keeper didn't place him completely on my shoulders, so trying to grin while supporting him was a bit of a challenge. :rofl: He was a gorgeous snake though!

Heya, thanks so much for the friend add, I just thought it was so cool that our snakes are so similar in age and colouring that I couldn't resist saying hi. :D Frank is so gorgeous, it's wonderful that you ended up with such a lovely snake. How're things going for you at the moment then?

Good, I'm glad you're getting on with your little friend, they're lovely pets aren't they? :D Have you managed to measure him yet? Tango's just shed and she's now about 113cm's, I can't get my head around it, she still seems to be growing like a little monster!
 
Tango is gorgeous, Natalie! I'm a first-time owner of a baby Anery that I've had only a couple of weeks, so I'm a real newbie trying to learn everything I can in order to raise him healthy and happy. Something you wrote caught my eye: "blue phase." What is that, Natalie? When does it happen? (I get the impression it's inevitable.) And what do I do then? Thanks!

Hey, thanks for posting, I think I've already come across your thread on my random lurking, your little anery is a cutie. :D A snake's 'Blue phase' is the process they go through whenever they shed, and there's two parts to it.

First the snake will become dull and pale in colour and their eyes will go cloudy. During this time they may be grumpy and may not want to be handled or fed, it depends mainly on your snake's personality. The second part is called the 'deep blue phase', and during this your snake will go back to almost it's normal colour, and it's eyes will clear once more. This is generally a sign your snake will shed in a matter of days. Keep them somewhat moist to make the shed easier for them, for example provide a tub of sphagnum moss for them to curl up in during their blue period.

The sign of a healthy snake is if the skin comes off in one whole piece! If the skin does come off in seperate parts, don't panic, just give your little guy a shallow bath in plain lukewarm water to give him a bit of a hand. It's essential to check that the skin over the eyes and the tip of the tail come off in particular. If the old skin is left on the eyes too long it can build up and cause them to rot, and for the tail if some old skin is left on the end it will constrict the blood flow to it, which can over time cause the part of the tail in question to shrivel and drop off.

Now, thanks to you, instead of telling friends my Pretty Boy is in the monthly process of shedding his dead skin, I can say he's entering his deep blue stage, after which he'll be back to his normal brilliant colour.
