I'm new to the website of course. I have been looking for the best snake for me and I'm having some trouble if anyone is willing to give me some pointers I would be most Greatful.

I think i corn snake might Work great for you, if you like snakes that is there really nice. you can also go with a ball python. corn snakes and ball pythons are "starter snakes." i would go with a corn snake. because they don't get so thick. and theres so many colors. here you can look at this site. just to get a idea about some of the colors http://www.moreptiles.com/available cornsnakes.htm corn snakes are really calm. i have 4. but i must warn you. its so addicting! i started off with 1.....(i was scared of snakes at the time.) now i have 4 soon too be 5 Lol and i love my snakes too death. :wavey: hope it helps! am sure you will get the best pet for you.

I live in South Carolina, I am a student, I live in an apartment. I know you dont know who I am. I was generally talking about getting a starter snake. Guess you didnt get that I apologize. Thanks for all of the help.

I think I'm going to go with a corn snake, I have looked at ball pythons, and southern Cal. King snakes (i heard they were the best starter snake) but i love the colors of the corn snake. thanks for all of your help. I'm looking for an albino or something exotic like that.

It's not a problem but I'm still not sure if it is a corn you are looking for. As Darkmoring said a corn is a great beginner snake, but keep in mind they can live upwards of 20 years. Just read your last post, an albino is a great morph, but not exotic, which still didn't hamper me I have 4 amels/albinos. Maybe get a motley or stripe amel. that is more exotic. I would get the set up first and check it all out. Then get the snake. Look for a reptile show in your area s then you can see different morph corns in person hold them, know the feeding habits, sex. Most pet shops can't provide this info. Does your apartment allow exotic pets?

I think a cornsnake is a good starter snake. A California Kingsnake is very similar in care requirments, but you are more guaranteed to have a pleasant personality with a corn. Most Cali kings are sweet, but there are a few exceptions.

It's preferable to buy your new snake from a breeder rather than a petstore, because you know it will be eating properly when you get it. Don't be afraid to buy from a reputable breeder on line. If you can find a reptile show in your area, you can talk to the breeders in person.

Well I just missed the show so thats out of the picture for a while. I live close to the jamel temple and thats were reptica was so. I have heard horror stories about this buying from a pet store but I think I may be out of options unless I want to wait for a while. what kind of setup do I need to get to accomidate these snakes?

Well if you want a baby corn. 10 gall work great. after a year think about upgrading too a 20 long gall. for the 10 gall. with a top for your tank. corn snakes are Great at finding ways to get out of there tanks. i use Aspen bedding from zoo med. or you can also use newspaper but don't use sand!. for one side of the tank it has to be around 80F. i use Heat lamps.but you can use also under tank mats. or heat cable. but don't use a heat rock. it can burn them. Make sure you get some hides, a branch, and fake Leaves. oh and don't forget a water dish. Mix all that together and Add a corn snake. And you end up with your first pet corn snake. i have 2 Snows. i love them one yellow and pink. one white. also a red albino. they look so neat. Good luck

I have been looking for a yellow with cool patterns or an orange with some narly patterns but im not sure yet. i have heard alot of horror stories about buying from the pet store but thats the only thing we have around here and im ready to get it started. i was wondering though. should i get one thats old enough to eat fuzzies or not? i was thinking that it would be really cool to raise it from a hatchling. let me know. you can PM me if you would like. take in mind I'm just getting started I dont know alot about all of this.

Pm sent. trigger i got a few weeks ago and he eats mice. but he was striking and jumping at first. since no one held him. now his pretty sweet. they grow kinda fast. one of my snakes peek a boo i got when she was a baby and now its been 4 months and she allot bigger. so a baby will work. but if you get a older one like trigger. then you need around a 20 long tank.

I dont want an aggresive snake. so how would i prevent the strikeing/jumping? another thing is are they born eating mice?

Pm sent. trigger when i first got him was only Striking Because he was never held since he was born and his a about a year old. a few days later. now his really sweet. as long as you hold them there as sweet a puppy.

That's a shame, I live in Spartanburg County and went to the show. I almost bought a Granite, but hubby wants me to wait till spring to get another snake. I also almost got an anery motley female to go with my motley boy, she was so pretty. I just didn't find one I couldn't live without. By the way, what would be a good price for a granite '07, male I think? I can recommend a petstore near me that is privately owned and carries healthy snakes that are well cared for. I got my snake there. I will pm you on this.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm not sure I'm one of the best breeders, but I do breed a few corns and produce a few morphs here and there. Next year should be a really good year...stay tuned for that. And yes, anyone who is within distance of me, I've been known to meet to swap dead presidents for cornsnakes.

WOW...you must really drive fast! I used to work at Riverbanks Zoo and communte from Anderson to Columbia very often and my fast time were 1 hr 30 min and the usual was closer to 2 hrs.

I would say if you really want a corn snake there is no harm in going to the pet stores and at least playing with a few so you have an idea for the way it moves through your fingers.

Then with MohrSnakes relatively close, get one from Him.

Speaking of pet stores....I heard this rumor that this guy in Anderson has been known to sell neat pos hets to local pet stores in the Greenville/Spartanburg area. Never know what you might find.

And yes, Spartanburng is closer to Columbia. Anderson is still down I-85 towards Atlanta from Spartanburg....exits 27, 21, and 19.
