HELP! Aspen Substrate coverage?

beaniebopps

Beanie
I have decided to switch to what most people use on here... aspen shavings. I have used astroturf/reptile carpet up until now.

I can buy it in 1kg bags, or 5.5 litre bags etc. etc. but I have no idea how many litres of aspen 1kg would be, so I don't know what the best value is!!

Also, my vivarium floor space is 48" x 18", so about 6 square feet... how much do I need to buy for a decent coverage?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

I always buy the biggest bag of aspen shavings I can find, as it's invariably cheaper that way. You'll want at least an inch or 2 on the bottom so your snake has enough depth to tunnel if he feels like it.

5.5 litre is a pretty small bag, you'll probably need bigger than that for your large vivarium.

Ditto, buy the biggest bad you can afford. I shoot for about 1.5" of substrate for my vivs and tubs. This is deep enough for them to bury themselves if they want to.

Hi Beanie, I live over in England and I buy this huge sack of Aspen shavings from my local reptile shop. I think it weighs around 15 to 20 kilos and is really tightly packed, so goes a long way. It cost about £17 I think and so far I've filled 4 tanks of your size and a 3ft tank with 2 to 3 inches and still have just over half the bag left so I can do them all again with no extra outlay!

Hope that helps and good luck, my corns love it!

Same here... I buy the huge bag and it lasts a while..just seal it back up well so no moisture gets in and it is cheaper that way..Good luck and your snakes will love tunneling in it:)
