Help! How long can you keep thawed mice?

So we got our snake today. She is lovely. Anyway, the breeder said she was due to eat today. He gave us 3 frozen pinky's that he said she had been eating to get us started. So we brought her home this morning, basically left her alone to get adjusted, and then tonight tried to feed her. First off, the mouse looks huge compared to her. She pushed it around a little, crawled all over it, seemed a little frantic and kind of jerky, but never ate. We left her in there 15 minutes, took her out, put her nose to nose with it again and then put her in the container with it again, and nothing. So, fine we'll try again tomorrow night or Monday, but now that we have this thawed mouse that she won't eat, do I have to throw it away and thaw another one tomorrow? How long can you keep thawed mice before they have to go?

Well, it's best to let a new corn settle in for 5-7 days before attempting to feed or handle. This way they are comfortable with their surroundings and won't stress as much. The general rule for a food item is no bigger than 1.5 X the fattest part of the snake. If it is bigger than that the best option is to wait until you can find smaller mice. If you try to feed too often the snake will get used to refusing and may become a problem feeder for you. Mice should not be refrozen/reused. If the mouse was the right size, I would suggest leaving her alone for a few days before attempting to feed again. Then leave her alone in a dark and quiet place to eat...it may take 20 seconds or maybe 30 mins. Every snake is different.

Hope that helps answer some of your questions!

I definetly think you tried to feed too soon. Even if she was due to eat today from the breeder, the snake will survive without eating during an adjustment period. I always give at least 5 days before handling(unless it's an E.R. then of course you have to handle). I have an 08 who still to this day has to be in a small deli container covered up with a dark cloth before he will eat.

Some people leave thawed food items in for a few hours, some over night, and even some 24 hours. Once it goes past about 12 hours I throw it away and try again later with a new one.
