Help, need opinoins on feeding new snake.

Nomed

Aimez le monstre.
I just got a 7month old snow from petco(I said I would never buy from there but ...oops) lol Tommrow is the scedguled feeding day. I want her to settle before i feed her. But she seems to be adjusting exremeltyyy well. She was hiding for the first few hours now shes completely fine and roaming around.

So, my question is should I feed her tommrow or should I wait a week so she can get better adjusted?

thanks,
Nomed

Go ahead and feed her. If she eats, fine, if not, wait a week. Make sure you leave her alone after feeding for 3 days. I'd give her the extra day to make sure she doesn't regurge from stress. I feed all my new arrivals the day they get in the house now. I found they eat readily for the most part and get a meal in them before shipping shock (or in your case, new home shock) sets in. Congrats on your new kid and we must have pictures!!

Thanks. I will feed her tommrow night then and wait 3 days. It seems shes doing just fine. I posted some pictures up already in the photogallery when i was putting her in the tank if you want to take a peek at them. :]

oh and this is her deffinition of a safe hide where noone will see her. I dont know why she dosent use the papertowel roll it hides her better but whatever lol.

Thank you again :]

They seem to pick the most unlikely hiding spots. You can set up what you think is the nicest setup and they'll hide in the groove of the lid..:) She looks very pretty.

Maybe I'm the oddball, but I never wait to offer food. Whether it's been one day or four, I offer new snakes food on my regular feeding day. I can't remember any snake, other than a known non-feeder, that didn't eat that first meal when given the chance. I say offer food. If it eats, great. If it doesn't eat, then wait the three days. You don't lose anything by the attempt.

You're not an oddball. If you read my post, I also feed when they come in although it's not necessarily my regular feeding day. I've made it a regular policy to feed any new snake the day it arrives. I seem to have less trouble getting them to take food right away. Especially the green tree pythons.

Meg- ahah I know I noticed it with kade you can have 34332 hides that cost $234 and they'll still like their papertowel rolls better

Jaxom- I read in a few places you should wait a little while to feed your snake after it moves in to avoid more stress problems but whatever. Thank you for replying.

I'm going to feed her tonight and maybe film it cause i have no life ahah well I'm actually filming it to have for future ref. to see changes in the way she feeds, just something i find intresting ahah

I'm another "early feeder".

I am of the opinion that offering food upon arrival in a new home helps to reduce stress. While I have no actual proof or empirical evidence to support this(other than 10 VERY healthy snakes), I believe that an immediate introduction of food relieves at least one common stress factor for a newly homed snake...food. 3 things that ALL snakes will stress about when moved to a new home are shelter, safety, and food. If I provide a friendly environment with lots of hides and safety/security...the only remaining stress factor is feeding. Giving them something to eat within the first 2 days or so lets them know that food IS available, and everyone feels better with a full belly.

For some reason, I have simply never bought into the "wait to feed them" idea. I have always believed that food, water and shelter is a top priority for animals, as these are the 3 basic necessities for survival. If a new snake is made aware that ALL of these survival factors are going to be satisfactorily met in as quick a time-frame as possible, it *should* reduce a majority of stress factors, and help your snake to feel comfortable, confident and secure in a timely manner.

To me...it only makes sense...and my snakes seem to agree.

That makes alot of sense :). Thanks I want her to feel as secure as possible so I'm going to feed her tonight,
thanks :D

Nice to know others think the same way I do. Like tyflier, I must be doing something right, as I've got 23 fat and happy snakes. Good luck, Nomed, and here's hoping it works as well for you as it does for us.
