hello, i'am a newbie lol, my formamature "i cant spell, the thing that measures heat" is reading 74, its in the middle on my tank half way up, is this okay? hes been on the cold side for like 3 hours and he hassent moved.. i dont wana desturb him but will he be okay like that... by cold side i mean the side witch doesent have the heat mat on...

Thermometer???

You need to measure the heat where the snake is, not up the wall. So measure the temp right on top of your UTH (under tank heater) right on top of the glass. Then measure over at the cool end, under the hide. Some people have indoor/outdoor thermometers with two probes, so they can read both areas at once.

I have a bunch of Flukers thermometer/hygrometers (measures humidity) which record max, min and current temps. Very useful to see what's going on over a period of time, and not too expensive.

Yes, that's normal. Your skin temp is 91- so a 75-85 degree snake will feel cool. As people like to remind you- "Your hand is not a thermometer!"

No, it is not ok. Like Nanci said, you need to have a digital thermometer with the probe directly on the glass over the UTH. It is also normal for them to feel cool. If he feels warm, he's either too hot, or you have icy cold hands.
