Help with heating?

Hi everyone

I'm having trouble getting my vivarium temperature up! At the moment it's only 20 degrees C.

I am using a large ExoTerra dessert heat mat attached to the underside of my ExoTerra glass vivarium, and with a Microclimate ministat too.

The ministat instructions say that I should put the attached probe inside the tank but doesn't fit in the holes in the viv... At the moment I have the door open and the probes inside to gauge the temp. (Which seems to be dropping not rising)

What am I wrong or what am I missing?

Thanks! X

I don't think you are doing anything wrong, I had that problem with heat mats and switched to heat lamps.

Corn snakes don't fly. They spend most of the time laying on their bellies on the bottom of the tank. Your heat mat should be attached to the underside of the tank. The temperature probe should be laying directly on top of it. If you are trying to get the heat up inside the tank itself, then the temp of the mat will be too hot for the snake. You want the "Hot Spot" to be where the snake can curl up on it. And then have a hiding box right over top of it. You should also have a hiding box on the cool side of the tank. That way the snake can choose whether to cool off or warm up.

Aren't there holes at the top that slide open? I'm using an ExoTerra with some off brand of thermostat, with a HUGE probe, and it fits. (For a frog.)
