Herpin at the jail Phase II.....

Cflaguy

Old School Snakeman
Some might remember I'm working on the jail expansion here in Polk County, Fl. The jail is in the middle of nowhere and is a haven for herpers. Problem being I can't take a camera at the moment due to working in secured areas. Not "supposed" to have my cell phone in the secured area either.
But the other day just outside the driveway I found this. Breaks my heart. Was DOR for less than an hour I'd say. No rigga and still very bright coloration. Second DOR corn in the last month....
Sorry for poor quality but pics are from cell phone....

Yes Lori.....

How sad...did it get run over?

What always troubles me are the DOR snakes outside the lane. Those close to the shoulder. Wonder how many folks swerve to hit snakes.

When I was much younger I was at one of my herpin spots early in the morning when I spotted a Florida Pine crossing the road. For those who don't know it is rare to find a Pine, they don't show up everyday. I got within about 100ft when an oncoming car swerved and ran him right directly over. I threw my snake stick at the car and hit it on the hood. Two guys got out and it was on.....

Just recently cruisin in the Green Swamp I pulled up on a juvenile Cottonmouth as an adult crossed the road ahead. A drunk redneck in a truck came by and asked what the hell I was doing. I showed him the little Cottonmouth and pointed out, I pointed out, I showed him the large Cottonmouth up the road. Told him I would be up there directly to catch that one. He promptly drove up there and ran her over.

People that do that are disgusting. Hitting an animal for "fun" makes me want to do unmentionable acts to those people.....for "fun"

What makes it more sick was that the drunk guy KNEW it was going to be captured. He did it more to spite someone that understood something his deteriorating braincells could not cope with. Is it legal to catch and keep wild snakes? I have an almost 4 foot garter living in the stump by my trailer. He winters there. Could I try to catch him? Or should I just try to protect him and keep enjoying his company when working in my patio garden?

Typically stuff like that is governed by state and local law. Here, for instance, it is legal to keep native species, but illegal to sell them without a special permit. Since corns are native to VA, I am required to have a permit to sell them, even if they are captive bred / hatched babies. :shrugs:

Thanks I emailed my local conservation folks. They "should" know the regulations on this!

speaking of Jail, I work in one here in Texas, about a year ago one of my co workers went out to one of the transport vans to go on a transport. He felt something hit his boot. He looked down, and lit the flashlight up, and there was a baby Copper Head attacking his boot. He killed it.

I'm not going to lie...if something like that happened to me, I'm afraid I might have killed it too. Not on purpose, of course. But I think my survival instinct would kick in and I might kick it away from me before my "flight" instinct kicked in.

I just pray that this never happens to me, because I'm afraid to know how I would react out of instinct.
