herpstat vs. herpstat ND

okay so i have a zoomed reptitherm UTH on the way, and for a thermostat i am going to purchase one of the herpstats. now, there is the
herpstat and the herpstat ND. do i really need to spend the extra 25ish dollars for the herpstat ND? from what i can see, the only real difference is the "coil warming" (don't even know what that is) and the nightdrop. do i really need a night drop feature? it doesn't get overly cold at all in the winter, because my room heat is always on, and in the summer it DEFINITELY doesn't get too cold.

so what do you guys think, herpstat, or herpstat nd?

ND has high/low alarms. That's worth it to me. I have my first Herpstat, which I love, but purchased four NDs at the Thanksgiving sale when I booted out all the Zoo Meds. This way I will know if anything goes bad while I am home, at least...

The ND also has a LCD display while the normal Herpstat has a big LED display. I was sort of hoping for the LED display where I could read the temp from across the room when I got the ND. It's not really that big a deal though.

I imagine the more versatile lcd display makes setup a bit easier.

I have one of each, but use them identically. I didn't set the alarms (I should, since it's in the basement where I'm not a lot. Okay, Nanci... I'll program the alarms). Set up is not the same, but neither is very difficult. I don't use the night drop function, so I don't miss it.

I like the display on the non-ND better, too, but it's so bright that I have to cover it up, since it's in my bedroom and I took this class about how even little LED lights on things can keep you from sleeping as well as you could be in total darkness...

THAT explains a lot... LED on the 500R, my alarm clock, DVD, TV, Dish Box, smoke alarm... there's little dots of light all over my bedroom at night.

yeah i think i am just going to opt for the herpstat. i don't really need the nightdrop feature at all, and i'm RIGHT beside my snakes tank anyways. and even if i were at work and the alarm was going off, NOBODY in my house would figure out what to do

i have received my herpstat, and i have a UTH for Zora. trouble is... i'm going to be using the herpstat to monitor both Milly AND Zora's cage!! this means i need to get another probe cord for the herpstat... right?

If conditions are the same in both cages, you do not need more than one probe. Hence, why there is more than one outlet attached to the herpstat :)

Just monitor both cages temps with two different thermometers and you should be set!

well when i actually get Milly's new tank i will be using the zoo med 50-60 gallon UTH, and on Zora's tank i'm only going to be using the 10-20 gallon UTH. should i invest in another probe?

As long as the UTH are the same brand I wouldn't think it would be a problem. Monitor the temps in there for a little while to see how if they fluctuate at all. I have used two different sized Zoo-med UTH's on tanks and got almost same temps (varied about 1 deg.).

okay, thanks a lot! i have just finished setting up Zora's UTH and the herpstat. the herpstat seems to be doing a fine job, it's sitting at 86.7 and it's only been on for about 15 minutes. i have a 2nd exo terra digital thermometer placed right beside the herpstat probe, but it seems to take longer for the exo terra thermometer to register the correct temperatures. i'm keepin' an eye on the herpstat, and will check back and see what the temps are like in about another 20 minutes.

Milly's UTH (nor her tank) have even arrived yet, but so far the heatlamp is doing well. also may i add, both Zora AND Milly are deep, deep in blue! i expect two sheds within the week, Milly may actually shed in the next few days. did i mention both of my snakes are CHAMPION eaters? they have never refused a meal, not even in blue!

I only use the expensive herpstats on my arboreals that require close temperature regulation. The cornsnakes are regulated using the cheap $40 on/off zoomed thermostats you can get from Big Apple. They're cornsnakes, not tropical species! They are very hardy and won't even notice a 3 or 4 degree change in temperature. I do not use night drop on my animals except when cycling the arboreals for breeding. If I'm going to breed the corns, they are brumated so night drops mean nothing really.

I guess I like Herpstats because I'm an information junkie. ZooMed tells you it's off, or it's on. Herpstat tells you it's 83.4F and it's supplying 30% power to it. Plus, with five Herpstat NDs in the living room, I can walk around in the dark without turning on lights!

I'd rather buy more snakes with the money I save and they do the same job...just one does it a little more closely. I love my herpstats, but they cost as much as a down payment on a nice arboreal! I can use one herpstat to regulate 3 cages and the same for the Zoo Med brand. All my herpstats indicate is if it's using full power or less power (lights are different colors) but it doesn't tell me exactly what it's using....besides...I don't care! :) If the snakes are happy, breeding and eating...then it's doing what it's supposed to do! Of course, if you do use the nite drop (as I am on my breeding Amazons) then I have to spend more to get the cord.
