He's Gone T-T

I bought my first corn from a pet store about a week and a half ago. He had ate the night before I bought him, I spent over $300 that day and made sure he had a good home. I tried feeding him over the past few days, he refused to eat. I talked to the pet store, I read articles on here. Nothing I did worked, the pet store said if he hadn't ate by the 20th to bring him in and they would force feed him for me.

I went to change his water today and he was dead :(

My first snake is gone, he must have been sick... I don't know. I want to get a new one, but now I'm scared. I don't know if it was my fault for not noticing something that was a give away. He seemed fine, it had only been a week and a half since he had ate, and everything I had seen said it was normal for a baby snake in a new home to not eat for a while. I had a gradient for his temps, room temp at one side and about 80-85 on the other.

Did I do something wrong?

Well I would like to get a new one, but I don't have the money for it right now. I'm going to make sure I know more next time, and try and figure out how to make sure it doesn't happen again.

If anyone has any baby snakes for really cheap or have one extra they would give up please let me know, I don't have much money currently... otherwise I'll have to wait a few months again.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like you had things set up correctly. Did you have hides for him on both ends of the temp gradient?

He may have been stressed out by the new environment and the several attempted feedings. Trying to feed too often can be stressful and will sometimes result in snakes deciding not to eat. It's very hard to say. Even baby corns can go weeks without eating so it doesn't immediately sound like starvation was an issue.

I do know that pet stores are not the best place to buy reptiles. Many are not well versed on care requirements. The snake may have been ill before they got it. I think that's most likely.

I also think the store owes you a refund. Have you contacted them about the snake's death?

Oh no, sorry for your loss Skandranon.

I agree with Dionythicus, it sounds like he was sick before you got him and that you have done nothing wrong.

Don't dispare, you will get a healthy little one that will make you happy (and that you will make happy by the sound of things ;) ) for the years to come.

Good luck!

i would definitely ask the store for a refund. and find out if they have a guarantee on live animals. unfortunately, most pet stores do not specialize in reptiles and have poor husbandry. i doubt it is your fault if you set up his viv correctly.

more than likely, the snake was ill when you bought it. maybe it wasnt properly cared for at the petstore or by the supplier. i've seen snakes at petstores that are so tiny and sickly that this wouldnt surprise me. some are so tiny i swear they just came out of the egg and havent even had their first meal yet. and the pet store staff will still sell them and say that they're perfectly healthy. because they just dont have any clue. Did you ask them if he had eaten at all for them??? Good pet stores keep records of feedings. even if it's just a notation on the deli cup or tank that they're being kept in.

i would say, see if you can get a refund, and then check about getting a corn from a breeder. you might be able to find someone local or nearby and that may save you on shipping. i've gotten both of my corns locally, and they were quite cheap...$20 each. and they're healthy, no problems feeding at all.

I agree the pet store was most likely at fault, if you post where you are located then we can see if there's a good breeder nearby.
The fact that pet store offered to force feed for you kind of makes me wonder if they were force feeding it before, usually a snake that is having to be force fed is in trouble. They should have offered a refund or different snake. Go talk to them and see if they will refund your money or give you store credit at least but I would not get my next snake there!
