Hi all!

Sorry, had a stupid moment and then had to leave my computer for a while. Just realized that wasn't just underlined text it was a link. Oops lol.

Thanks for the link. I am on my phone right now but I will check it out in a minute. :)

Had a great handling session with Orion today. At first he just curled up in my hand and stayed there for about 10 or 15 minutes. Then he uncoiled, came out and played all over my hands and arms. The whole session lasted about 40 to 45 minutes. He only tried to get away a couple of times then calmed down almost instantly afterwards. :D

I was concerned at first because when I got him out of his home he felt very cold. The thermometer (I know I am headed to get the right kind post haste) said the temp on the cold side was 72 but he felt colder then that. He acted a little sluggish playing on my hands before he coiled up in my palm. Is this something to be worried about? I replaced the lamp that came with the kit with an 8 1/2 inch and a red 150 watt bulb. I've hung the lamp on the dvd rack next to his home about 4 to 5 inches up and right over the side. The light is angled from cold side to hot side. I am watching the temp close and will buy a lesser wattage lamp if needs be. I read somewhere else in this forum that a day lamp can burn the lighter colored snakes so I decided to try the red.

If I am off base with this please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Snakes are cold blooded and can't produce their own body heat so they'll always feel cold and they do need another heat source (Under The Tank Heater - UTH).

Lights aren't really that great for albino snakes something to do w/ their skin pigmentation? Plus they're nocturnal. You'll have a better chance of seeing him out and about w/out the light.

The UTH allows them to produce body heat which they need for digesting food. Along with the UTH you should get a digital themometer w/ a probe and rheostat or dimmer for the heating pad (they do get pretty hot).

So ultimately ditch the light :grin01:

I have the same thermometer but in black and same UTH, both from PetSmart though...
And i have the dimmer in black and they all work great if you're looking for a review lol :D

Thanks for the links I will check them out. :)

I knew he would feel cool it just worried me when he felt cold and was sluggish. I got the red light because I read on here and on other sites that it didn't mess with their day/night cycles. I also read that the red lights wouldn't burn the lighter colored snakes b/c of less or no uv output. I keep my house around 68 to 70 degrees b/c I brew my own beer and that seems to be perfect for the yeast. His cool side was showing right at 70 and I wanted to get that to 75 to 80 per other threads recommendations. My wife had actually gotten home with two probe thermos when you posted and I will install them tomorrow to see if the light is really needed.

Sounds great. As long as the warm side stays between 80-85 degrees & the cool side is between 70-75, you'll be fine! :-D

Hey just checking back at the thread cute snake man. It is all ways fun to see kentucky has another snake fan!

Anyone have any suggestions on a good feeding setup? Since I added the aspen to his house i don't want to feed him in there and take a chance of him getting an impaction.:eek

First off welcome to the forum!!! Beautiful baby you have there and I absolutely love the name!!!

I've always fed my babies in an empty "I can't believe it's not butter" dish. Cleaned very well and with holes in the lid. But my babies have always been private eaters until they got some weight on them. But any type of container like that would work. A lot of others use deli cups that are clear and cover them with a hand towel if needed.

Also I always get my vines for my enclosures at the dollar store and they are bendable enough to form them around the viv very well. Cheap too if they poop on them and need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

Hey my friend time will tell a bit more about they type of morph you have. The more you get just red/white it may be a candycane amel. The more pastel yellows/orange/red may very well be a creamsicle which is an amel (albino red corn) X emoryi (great plains rat).

Also, I am not sure how the folks on the forum feel about feeding a critter in its cage. I have always been told that it associates things coming in (such as hands) as a food source. I take my critters out at least 3x aweek even if for 10 min or so. Also I feed my critters in a separate container that they can associate w/meals all they want to. Theoretically, the more you handle your snake the more used to people it becomes.
Hope that helps. Beautiful animal!
All the best.

Thanks for the info and kind words guys. Around his head and a few inches back he is starting to get a yellow/orange coloring but its hard to see right now. After a few sheds maybe that will be more pronounced. (I hope so. I love the creamsicle color patterns.)

I did have another question about feeding in a seperate enclosure. When Orion gets the pinkie ingested:licklips: all the way do I put him right back in on the hot side of his home or wait a little while? I don't want him to get too cold being away from his heat source and I know from an earlier post that he needs the heat to help digest his meal.

Thanks again to everyone for all the advice.

As soon as he is done eating, wait 10 min & gently put him back in the tank. Sometimes my snake will go directly to drink water or he'll go to the warm side & lay. Very rarely will he go lay on the cool side. I'm sure he knows where the warm side is. If u want u can put him on the warm side.

@Sarah1228, thanks for the advice on the lamp. It turns out that the cool side temp is 71.4 degrees and the hot side is setting right at 84 degrees. Soooo, I ditched the light.:D I did buy a dimmer from lowes. It ended up being $6 because it was a non-stock item(they weren't going to carry it anymore)! Its also safer for me to use b/c it is a heavy duty 600 watt setup, what luck! As good as the temps are right now I haven't plugged it in yet.

BTW, if you are in the military Lowes offers a discount for us.(at least the one in my town does)

After handling him for about 45 minutes yesterday I wondered if he would feed today. Thawed the pinkie, put him in a country crock tub, and offered the food. He had to strike about 5 times but when he finally "stuck the landing" the pinkie didn't have a chance.

Thanks again everyone for all the great advice.

BTW, I upgraded his house a little. Let me know what you think.

GRANKIN01...

A real easy set-up would be some type of appropriately sized Rubbermaid-like tray.
