hognose

That guy let his snake CHEW ON HIM.

My hoggie has bitten me a few times and nothing ever happened, except the first time I was so startled that I shook my hand and flung her. D'oh.

I've been bitten by my hoggies about 3 times now and never had a reaction. However, I did not allow them to chew on me as they were removed within seconds of biting. All bites were due to feeding responses and my own carelessness. As they are rear-fanged, you still feel those needle sharp fangs go into you, but they are fairly short and do not penetrate too deeply.

For the most part, my males are pretty docile but I do have several adult females that will come after you with mouths wide open, but only because they are constantly hungry, not upset. :)

I've been bitten by an Eastern and a tri-color L. pulcher. I didn't let them chew on me. Nothing. Well, with the Eastern, maybe the cut bled a teeny bit longer than I would have expected.

thank you for the replies. i'm just getting some research in. i saw those pics and was just curious if a normal bite, not knawing would cause that bad of swelling

I just want to point out these guys are actual scientists. they work with herps as a Living and not as a hobby. they knew what they were doing when they let it happen to some degree. I think the swelling was a surprise.
I know one of the other people who contributes to herpnet.net.

Did I say he was an idiot? No. Did I say I disagreed with it? No.

I simply pointed out that he left the snake on his hand.

I am reasonably sure (even though my degree is in veterinary technology not zoology) that a bite from a snake that hangs on for 3-5 minutes (particularly a rear-fanged snake) is drastically different from the average bite in which the snake is removed in a few seconds.

I've been bitten by my female Tricolor once, but she only stayed latched long enough to realize she missed the yummy smelling mouse. No reaction.

For those that have answered that they got bit, but did not let the snake "chew" on them, .....How do you get a rear fanged Hognose off you, once it has you, with out hurting it ?

Hey Catherine- let's see some pics of your tris!!!

Unfortunately, my male did not make it due to a severe GI infection with possible bowel necrosis. His fecal was off the charts. Not enough Baytril in the world would've saved him. I lost him about a month ago :(

I'll try to get some updates on the female as soon as I get a chance though!

I just picked him off. He wasn't trying that hard.

My wife's hognose, got her, good. :eek1:
We tried to get it off, but it was on too well, and we did not want to harm the snake, more then nessecary. It chewed it's way off.

There was swelling and bruising. It's now my job to feed the Hognose.

swelling like the pics or swelling like a pinch just in the bite area?

jynxx did you go through a breeder or a local place in the valley?

I bought both of my Tricolors from Guardian Reptiles owned by Jenea Wood. For those who may be wondering, there is no blame slinging. Jenea was a joy to work with, and even offered me one of her keeper female so I would have an unrelated pair. She's a great person to work with.

I grabbed her head and pulled her off.

Now, when she bites HERSELF, I have a little more trouble getting her to let go. Truly, she is the dumbest snake I've ever owned. She's also my favorite though.
