HOLY CRAP! Calm snake turned pyscho

Snake Addict!
I just brought my snakes out of brumation and figured I'd introduce my bloodreds just to see what they would do. I figured that they wouldn't react to each other as they haven't had much time to warm up, but figured it wouldn't hurt just to see what would happen. They both seemed a bit confused as to what to do at first, but they did both respond to the other one by jerking their bodies, but I decided to just put them back in their respective cages as nothing seemed like it would happen too soon (even though the male arranged his body on top of the female he stopped pursuing her after a bit).

When I went to pick up the female, who has until now been the most laid back sweetest snake I've EVER encountered, she struck at me, but thankfully missed. She then proceeded to coil up her entire body into a huge S, with the whole first half of her body off of the ground, hissing at me as well. Now that I think about it, I should have gotten a photo of it, as I've never seen a corn do this, and I did have my camera right there too.

It took quite a while before she was calm enough for me to pick her up. I had no idea that they would get so pissy at the advent of breeding season, especially with this girl who has never previously acted defensive at any time I have had her. I had another female act pissy when I was taking away her eggs, but that was nothing compared to this reaction.

It's like a little snake temper tantrum. Maybe she's mad at you for taking away the heat/food. LOL

I know nothing about brumating, but I just wanted to comment. :)

Any chance they're both boys?

It sounds to me that the female might be mis-sexed and could be a boy too. My 2 big boys do the twitchy dance for each other when they get put together after being sepparated for feeding or cleaning and will have not seen each other for more than 2 months when they come out of brumation in a month so I'm expecting to never put them together again now that they're sexually mature. I hope for your sake you have the gender you want but it's just another thing to think about.

I'm sure she's a girl. She developed follicles last spring but I didn't mate her because she was still too small, IMO. Thankfully she just reabsorbed them instead of laying slugs.

I've found that both sexes will do that jerking motion. I think it's a breeding thing for the males but more of an "I'm annoyed" thing with females. But I think the males will use it as an "I'm annoyed" thing as well, in other circumstances.

Follicles are "eggs" in the ovaries that are waiting to be fertilized. Because I didn't breed her, she just reabsorbed them into her system instead of shelling them and laying slugs (infertile eggs).
