Home-made vivs

CornNoobie

No longer a Noobie!
I know there is a few threads at the minute on home made racks. But Id like to see some peoples homemade vivs if you have pictures? Im thinking of starting to make 2 in a few months time when my 2 07's have grown a bit more, so would be nice to see everyones ideas and DIY skills! Any input is welcome, and hopefully blueapplepaste will have a few pics to post?!! :)

For a heat source I'm using "flexwatt". It's very thin, like paper. I use 3/4 inch plywood and mortice's a cavitied in it to holed the flexwatt. Then mortice another 1/8' deep even wider the the first to cover the area with Plexiglas. This is what is recommend by the manufacturer of flexwatt. This leave the floor even, level, smooth, all the way through. I have had no problems this set up.

Here are some pics off my website of the stuff I've made. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Some great builds there! Ive got a few ideas now, the only thing I havent cleared up though, is how to install the uth. I know I will buy a new heat mat 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the base, and I will drill a hole in the back to feed the wire through, but what is suitable to put on top of it for protection for your snake? Does it still need air air gap like it does with a tank? Thanks in advance!

Including wiring it all up, it probably took about 8 - 10 hours work.

Good job! I know you have your heat mat on the side, but as I wont have a lamp, mine will be on the base. Any idea of the best way of installation? Do you need to put something over the top of it?

Actually I have now modified it and got rid of the lamp, and have a big heat mat on the bottom! So I've just got the hole drilled right at the bottom and the heat mat going in, and I've got the aspen sitting right on top of it. Although if you are worried about it being too hot for the snake to lie on if it burrows, a piece of glass or thin tile to cover it would do great.

I've always just used flexwatt. I seal the connections up with silicone, then put a piece of acrylic on top of that and seal the edges of the acrylic with silicone so that the flexwatt and it's connections are water proof. I've done it this way for several years now w/no problems.

But with UTH, I've read that people just put them in and will use a piece of ceramic tile or plexiglass placed on top to distribute the heat. As far as airflow goes, I'm not sure how much they need or anything like that.

Right, so im thinking, just place the heat mat on the bottom of the viv, and place a piece of perspex over the top of it, without sealing it. Anybody think there will be any problems with this? and, anyone in the UK know where I could by some perspex sheeting?!!
