Oh my god. I would cry for days if I lost that many pets. I wonder how the fire started. Electrical malfunction, I'm guessing? Since he was away from home when it happened and they said it started in the basement.
That is horrible. Every time I leave my apartment I always fear a fire starting (all it takes is only of my neighbor's apartment to catch fire to potentially cause mine to). It's good they saved some of them, but I cannot imagine what he feels right now.
A long time ago, when I lived in Minnesota, when I was married, maybe around 1990? my husband and I built a house. It was big- 3800 square feet, and every detail was designed by us, built by us, and perfect. We were a month away from moving in, and had most of our daughter's toys out there, some personal items, a momma cat and her three kittens. I got a call at work from my brother-in-law saying your house is on fire. It was out by the time I got there. It was heart-wrenching. The firemen had removed the bodies. Very few things were salvageable. Then we had a huge fight with the insurance company. Eventually, the house was demolished. (That was the very first time in my life I called in sick to work when I was not- to see the house torn down). It took a lot of strength to build a new one- we were exhausted after working every spare minute for a year to build that one. I won't ever be able to erase the memory of smoke in connection with a house fire in my mind. Whenever I return home and see smoke off in the distance, or hear sirens, my heart races and I feel like crying until I get within sight of my house and see that it is safe. I am terrified of another house fire- not for me, but for my animals.
After we'd lived in the new house for a few years, I was asleep in the middle of the day, having worked the night shift. I awoke to loud noises- and looked out the patio door of my bedroom and saw chunks of roof flying through the pasture. It was a tornado. Luckily, no animal lives were lost. Now I'm terrified of tornados, too.
I feel so bad for him. Disasters are just heart breaking.
Nanci I feel bad for him, but you write so well explaining what you went through, I feel far worse for you. I'm not sure how I could deal with losses like that.
And yes, the fire started in the basement, according to the article and that's where the reptiles were kept, so I'm wondering if some equipment malfunctioned.
This is so sad, all of our kids live in Longview, we go there all the time. Don't remember seeing this place or reading about it. I bet it was a great place to visit.
