How do you do it?

Hello everyone. Im new here and am looking to get a cornsnake around christmas time and am wondering how you guys do it every week? I mean...watching a mouse (even if frozen) get devoured by a snake! I mean snakes seem really cool but I just cant get over my phobia. I feed crickets every day to my baby beardie and im fine with that. Ive tried the 'its just natures way' thought but I just cant get over it! Does anyone have any suggestions?

P.S.Love the smilies :smash::eek1::dunce::poke::eatsmiley:eats02:

After the first couple times it does get easier.... but if it bothers you that much... after putting the pinkie in with the snake.... make sure the lid is on well and just walk away and dont look for atleast an hour :) It does get easier the more you do it.. guess you just evenually get jaded to it... And it really is the way nature for them works... that is what they eat and since they are our pets, we need to give them what they need to servive and thrive :)

was just hopeing it might is all :) We have all been there at one poin or other in our lives :) So, you came to the right place to ask questions and I hope you have a wonderful relation ship with your new snake :)

Unfortunatly I dont have a snake yet but im trying to persuade my mom to let me have one :) my dad is fine with it. In fact he loves snakes. Any ways of persuasion?

That being said. How long would 50 pinkies go (frozen) for a baby corn? I want to get a caramel motley corn or a normal corn. Anyone have any feedback on getting corns from local pet shops?

well, if you look up the Munson Plan on here.... that may help you in guesstamating how long 50 pinks would last for one snake :) I dont really follow it but it does have very good info on it :)

as for pet stores.... there are soooooooo many horror stories :( I have gotten from stores but was very careful in inspecting all the animals... and asking for charts and things like that.... but I Much prefer the hatchlings I get from other breeders... just better service and usually much better quality of animal too and you will usually get the whole history of the snake from the breeder like hatch date and fed dates, shed dates etc.... where at a pet store..... well, you will usually get told... "It got fed a pink a few days ago" as a standard reply.... no matter what snake you are asking about.... and most have no idea when it was fed or if it even ate what it was offered..... My choice would be from a breeder :) but thats just me :)

Thats somewhat the reason I wanted to get one from a petshop. I want to save animals. I got a beardie a few weeks ago from petco and it was on calcisand and was eating mealworms with 3 other beardies. Same goes for snakes. I want to help the little guys.

Ill look into the munson plan

good luck! :) I beleive that snakes are one of the most simple pets to care for :) 5 to 7 day feedings.... no walks outside on a leash and poo to pick out of the yard... just a little scoop in the aspen and all gone lol plus water ... no fur to get all over the funiture.... no loud noises to wake anyone up in the middle of the night (I have birds that LOVE to do that!!) ..... just easier, cheaper and cleaner :)

Hah. About aspen. Would I have to change out the whole thing every month or so like a hamster cage? If not then I guess I found my substrate! I know what my hide is going to be. Im not too worried about a perfect water dish. Im probably going to get a big grapevine and some bend-a-vines with a UTH. Any objections?

Ways of persuasion:

1. Look up all info on the care of snakes to show your mom you know exactly what your getting into and how to take care of it.

2. You never have to bathe it, or walk it...It won't keep you up at night from barking or squeaking running wheels..

3. It's a pet she never has to come near and it won't go near her unwantingly like a cat or dog or even rodent would..

4. No hair or fur around the house..

5. Not really any smell as long as the tank is kept clean

6. Don't need someone to take care of it when you go away on a few day vacation..just feed it before you go and it'll be fine for the next 6 days..

7. Great way to show you can take care of a pet...plus..just tell her that could be the only gift you get for christmas..

usually with the aspen you just spot clean but I, myself, after a couple months clean it out totally :) super easy :)

Just remember little snakes love Tiny places to hide.... I usually start mine out in the little 1/2 coconut shells :) they love them. or tubes partially buried in the aspen.... the water dish just need to be big enough for them to crawl into but not so big they are swamped IMHO :) anything else is good.... vines, peices of log, fake flowers....

on the uth.... I cant help you.... sorry :( I dont use them :) but I know most of the ppl on here do and I am sure they will be more than willing to help you with any questions you have regarding them :)

Maize - answer to #7. I told her that about the bearded dragon I got a few weeks ago :smash::dunce: But im confident in getting a snake. My dad is going to take me up to The reptile Depot ( www.reptiledepot.com ) to look at snakes in the next week or so. At that time I hope to get a snake.

I must be a sicko I enjoy watching mine eat and have tons of photos of it. I also fed live mice to my friends Ball Python which was awesome to watch. :eatpointe

Almost everyone who doesn't breed there own feeders uses mice from The Mouse Factory. Depending on the size of your new snake, I have a baby and yearling myself, I have been told to order some of almost everything because in the first stages they are going to be getting bigger pretty quick. You also save on shipping if you get a larger order. If you know someone else who has a snake you can always go in on an order together to save money.

I like watching mine eat, especially the hatchlings, but I only feed thawed prey. Most of my little ones push the pinky against something to help it go down their throats, but my amazing little lavender Voldermort eats his with the entire front of his body straight up, just swallowing!

I personally find live feeding to be extremely disturbing. I love ALL animals, and hate the idea of something feeling pain and fear as its dying when it doesnt have to be that way.

I also must voice an opinion about the whole breeder vs pet shop thing. If you want to "save animals", buying from a pet shop is the wrong way to go about it. The reason is that if a pet shop keeps their animals improperly, and you buy one, all it tells them is that they made a profit, and its time to order another snake that they can keep in the same poor conditions. You may have gotten one snake out of there, but it opens the door for more animals to suffer.

Plus petshops usually have a poor selection. Normals...yes, they have plenty of those. But you mentioned a caramel motley. Pet shops rarely if ever have something like that! A healthy properly sexed caramel motley from a breeder would make a much better first snake than a possibly non feeding, possibly underweight, possibly mite infested, possibly sick with respiratory problems normal would ANYDAY!!

Thanks steve. I wont get one from a petshop. But ive been looking at a shop a few hours away from me and it seems like the best petshop you would ever see. www.reptiledepot.com is the website. It seems like they have cared for lots of reptiles. Has anyone had any luck with these people? Im going to go there soon and they have lots of snakes to choose from :crazy02:

Hi Caboose, nice to meet you!
My name's Beth, btw, but don't be embarassed, you are not the first person to call me Steve, nor will you be the last. But for the LIFE of me, I don't know why! :)

There are some AWESOME breeders on this site.
I understand the desire to go somewhere, actually see and hold a snake, fall in love and take it home. Seriously, I do. But you won't go wrong by going with a breeder who is passionate about this species over a shop.
If you need help, please feel free to pm me!

I just checked out the site. It does look as though they have a very nice selection, and know what they are doing. Most likely, you would get an excellent snake from there. This place looks ALOT better than most pet shops. But, still check out the breeders here. I would still prefer a breeder corn over an "establishment" corn, plus many breeders here have ACR registered stock, and that is always a plus!

Alright I thought it was a pretty nice place myself. Im probably going to - actually I know im going to fall head over heels for snakes there but ill check out the breeders too. The cage deal is also perfect because when my baby outgrows his 10gallon and moves into a 20g long, I can use the 10g for my cricket keeper. Boy I hope this goes down well.
