How do you get the probe to stick to the glass?

Bobo's Mama

proud corn mommy!
I've got two probe thermometers. One is in the viv of my calm laidback Amel. He hardly roams around at all, and isn't large enough to affect the probe or move it at all. The other probe thermometer is in Doug's viv. He's nearly 600g and when he moves around its like he's trying to burrow to the center of the earth! He is constantly moving the probe away from the glass, so I'm having a hard time monitoring the temps. I've got his UTH hooked up to a thermostat, and it works fairly well, its just hard to determine the temp when he moves the darn probe when he tunnels. The probe has a sticky pad on it, but I hesitate to use it because I don't want it to get unstuck from the glass and accidentally get stuck to his skin. Any advice on how I could get it to stick without using the sticky pad? Do you think I could glue it down? or would it be the same as using the sticky pad?

I don't see why you couldn't use a glue or even aquarium silicone to hold it down. Once dry it won't adhere to him.

I know a lot of people don't like to use tape for fear that it may stick to and harm their snakes, but I use masking tape to tape down my thermometer/stat probes without any problems.

That's basically the stuff I use (I don't know if mine is acutally Scotch brand). It's the least adhesive tape I've ever come across. It's entire purpose is just to make painting trims and such easier and then to be removed. It peels off extremely well, and I can't imagine it would damage anything it your viv, let alone your snake.

I have black electrician's tape holding down one of my thermostat probes. Works like a charm for me.

Well, as someone who has taped her green tree python to a perch accidently, I no longer keep anything resembling tape in with the snakes. It's too easy for an end to get loose and have them stick to it. The stress to the snake and the possible loss of scales or more damage just isn't worth it. When it happened I wanted to kick myself for not thinking it could. Fortunately, olive oil took the tape off after about an hour of carefully dipping q-tips in oil and snipping off pieces with only a minimum of scale damage.

In the fish care section of any pet store they sell suction cups with arms or loops, on the end that are used to hold submersible thermostats or air tube hosing, into fish aquariums. Our thermostat and thermometer, both came with one but you can purchase them individually.

This is what they look like

This is what ours has and would be what I suggest you get. They come in all different sizes so you should be able to find one that fit’s the width of the probe end you are trying to secure. There are even ones that are sold with rigid plastic clips on the end that literally lock over a cord but I wouldn’t use those as it would just be a pain if your guy pried it open and you had to keep going in to put it back.

Get one of the loop ones pictured above and run the probe through it. I would get one that actually was going to be a real tight fit for your probe to fit into so you don’t have to worry about it getting pulled out of that loop. Then simply secure it to the glass with the suction cup portion. If you find that he strong enough to pry that suction cup off then I would secure the cup to the tank with aquarium sealer.

What I did with the probes on my thermos was run loop the wire around and down the leafy vines that were suctioned to the wall beside the thermos and used small black twist ties at the top and bottom of the vine to hold in place. then I just put the vine at the bottom where it would be naturally. Only problem I have is when Nagini tries to climb the vine and the suction cup comes off and I have to reattach the vine and thermo. But it keeps it hidden and in good reading area.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll try the suction cups, and if that doesn't work I will use aquariam silicone glue. This is gonig to be Doug's home for at least a year or so. When I move out and have more room, I'd like to move him to a 40 gallong breeder tank, but this should do till then. He's in a 20L now. Thanks again. :wavey:

I also use electricians tape and it works great. I have had no problems so far. And it sticks great! I have had problems with masking tape in the past.

i use tap but i make 100% shore that i know thats its secure.

What i do is after i attach the probe i rub aspen over it to see if it will come loose and also the aspen will stick to any sticky patches left.

My corn is allmost allways berried down were the probe is and has never had a problem.

don't use gaffa tape or any super strong stuff
