How does your snake react to dogs?

Bharmonika

Corn Crazy!!!
Okay, I have three cornsnakes. The creamsicle I have had since he was a hatchling theree years ago. The snow and the anery I have had for a couple of months. I got them both as adults.Anyway, I took the creamsicle out of his enclosure and put him in a rubbermaid and fed him. No problem. I did the same for the snow. All of a sudden, he curls up like a cobra and strikes the sides of the container. He does this over and over again and is hissing up a storm. I thought that is was me that he was mad at for some reason. After he calmed down, I put him back and got the anery. A few minutes later, she starts doing the same thing! I was totally bewildered. None of my snakes have ever done this before, then I look next to me and realize that my black german shepherd is standing next to me, peering into the container on the table. Apparently, my dog scares the snakes.Duh!! I felt stupid. I guess my creamsicle is used to the dog, but the two newer ones aren't. I was just wondering how your snakes react to dogs.

If you didn't notice the dog was stood there for a while.. perhaps he wasn't stood there when the creasicle was out? Can't imagine any snakes would be ok with a german shepherd looming over them if they had never seen it before! I have seen photos of people's snakes and dogs together, seemingly quite happy! Depends on what they're used to I guess!

I have had the creamsicle for three years and have had other dogs around him and he has never reacted before. I don't know what the situation was like with the new ones. I got the snow off of craig'slist and the anery at a reptile show. The dog's nose could barely reach the rubbermaid on the table. It is a clear container so I guess the fact that they could probably see her nose and smell her just freaked them out.

Doesn't matter if the dog can't reach them - just being in the same room was obviously threatening enough! Perhaps your creamsicle is very laid back or has just got used to seeing dogs over the years :)

It's also funny when it works the other way around. My sister-in-law's jack russel/dachschund mix has no problems with my corn snakes, her king snake, nor her rosy boa. But bring out the western hognose and Jasper thinks it's the end of all existence. He seriously wants to kill that *one* snake and chubby honestly couldn't care less about *him*.

i dont think my snake realizes my dog is even alive. he crawls all over my dog, and never really does anything different than normal. My dog just thinks the snake is an extra finger/hand, and reacts the same to my snake crawling on her as when i'm petting her; she enjoys it =)

My two in the top tanks can't see the dogs, nor can the dogs see them. Only the dachshund is allowed in the snake room. He and my Alabama locality corn have staring contents. Strangest thing you've ever seen, and rather amusing. Weenie whines and cries while staring, and the snake just coils up, and up, and up...not even doing a cobra impression, just staring at the dog.

I don't ever open the tanks with the dog in the room, though. He'd kill them in a heartbeat, I'm sure. He's a hunter, and has killed a couple pet birds over the years.

The weird part is that my snakes don't even acknowledge the cat. The cats sit there and watches them and sometimes he will even smack the glass. They don't even flinch.

Hehe, one of my snakes will touch noses with the cats and just. doesn't. care. BUT...he musks and strikes like crazy if the dog comes near.

None of my snakes or geckos seem to notice either dog and the dogs could care les about them. I guess their all different, but maybe in time the nakes will adjust and not be so afraid.

My rat and parrot hate each other... Whenever one is by the others cage they get defensive.
My dog just wants to play with all my pets. My dog even caught my parrot mid flight... Only the back tail stuck out... She was unharmed; however, a bit surprised :p

I haven't introduced my snake to any of my pets, she is still to small.

My house is a zoo (see my sig for proof of that!) but everyone seems to get a long fine. My snakes don't really seem to acknowledge that my dogs (all 4 of them come and go through my bedroom, where the snakes are) even exist. Ryplee, my little amel, definitely doesn't mind the elderly dog sniffing her or otherwise checking her out. Not sure how the other two would react if they were actually face-to-face with Silver though. IRA likes to tease the kittens through the glass of his viv. Very entertaining to watch!
