How many pinks before a fuzz?

Spitfire

Snakeless
I've been feeding my snake live pinks for a while now and last week she ate a huge one. It was almost a fuzzy with some hairs on it. I just ordered a 50 pack of frozen small pinks from the BCRF and I need to know how many pinks I should feed it and how often 'til I move up to fuzzies.

Spitfire,

I don't think you've provided enough information to answer your question too directly but I'll give it a shot...

If you have a hatchling you should feed it every 5 to 7 days. The size of the food item should not be greater than 1-1.5 times the diameter of the widest part of your snake.

Based on that estimation, your snake will start to outgrow pinkies at some point. You can then start feeding it two pinkies per meal. After some weeks of double pinkies he'll grow into fuzzies. You can apply the same rules to move him from fuzzies to small mice, them to larger mice etc.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Jason

Sam,

Once you get your corn firmly established on F/T mice, try offering two pinkies. Several successful feedings with two pinkies is a good indicator that it is time to move up to fuzzy mice.

Well would it really be considered throwing away two if the snake needs it to survive? Well it probaly doesn't but it easily takes down a really big one and I heard that two smaller food items are better than one large one.

When you're talking about pinkies vs. fuzzies, two pinkies probably do not have the same nutrition that one fuzzy would (although without doing the 'math' I couldn't be absolute) simply for the fact the rodent is less developed physically.

As far as digestion goes, it's probably easier for the body to digest two pinkies over a fuzzy, but the snake will be eating much larger prey than a pinkie once it is an adult, and their stomachs are designed to digest tough 'stuff'.

I never did the two pinkie "step" and switched over successfully to mouse fuzzies (the pinkies the store had just looked so tiny), no problem. As long as the temperatures are correct for digestion, and the prey size appropriate, a healthy snake should have no trouble.

Darned! I just ordered a bag of 50 pinks for my 2 month old snaked. I guess I'll just feed it 2 pinks a week til I'm out of pinks. The snake'll be like 8 monthes which I think is a good age to transition to fuzzies to at. I heard people say that most snakes are a fuzzies by 6 monthes and a couple of monthes won't hurt. I also might get another snake soon so that can help run out my supply.

One pinkie every 5 days or so will be just fine. Once the snake is readily accepting f/t, then bump up to two. Remember to take things slow. Try not to ge into too big of a hurry. Corns are very hardy and eating pinkies for a few weeks will be just fine. I know a guy that was so concerned about over feeding that he kept his corn on a single pinkie diet for over a year!

So it's okay to stay on pinks for a while I assume? And HAPPY 1000th POST CAV!!! That's a great accomplishment. I just got my hundreth.

Baby

My baby corn snake (Hector<3) Is only like...12 inches long..maybe longer. I've been feeding him 1 pinky twice a week...Is that good? Or should I change his feeding?

Side note

Like they had noted earlier in this post your snake can eat prey about 1 to 1 ½ times the thickness of him/her. You also don’t want to go through pinks so often because it starts to add up a lot over time. If your snake can keep down a smaller fuzzy than I think that he/she should be fine and there is no reason to worry… Most snakes that eat 2 pinks a week are ready to be bumped up to the next size, so I would take a chance and see if it’s ready for next size… What’s the worst that can happen? You just discover it isn’t ready yet and wait another few weeks.

No, He looks like the perfect size to move up to fuzzy. I have to say that is a beutiful snake. Is it a Candycane? Very nice, I have to give you that but I do not think that Hector is to small for the next size, bump him up, and observe.

I'd go to one pink every 4 or 5 days. After doing that for a while and you notice the snake looking like it wants more to eat after the one pink you can then bump it up to two pinks once a week. After doing that for a while you could go two pinks every 4 or 5 days. Then you could move up to fuzzies when the snake is looking for more after the second pink. Make sense?

NOTE: I wouldn't suggest taking any advice from R_A (reptile_addict) he has been the cause of death of at least 3 of his snakes with the possibility of an additional 3 he has in the freezer which he claimed to have died of natural causes. He seems to have a hard time remembering his stories (aka lying) so it's best to ignore his advice.

...Followup...

R_A has some good advice but you need to decipher it from the not so good advice, if you want to see why we don’t trust him just read the Fluffy is having a pre-shed soak and you will understand it all very quickly.

I know it is rather lengthy but you don’t need to read the whole thing, you will probably be to mad at him by like the 3rd page……………. its kinda sick :puke01:

><

I did read the Fluffy thing...It made me sad...k..And thank you..<3 I can't really hold hector now...he had escaped and is now all beetchy. But he's getting less and less aggresive.

He is acting like he wants more...But I'll finish off the pinkies that I have now, and then move onto a small fuzzy, or maybe two pinkies...Thank you..
