how to "pop" a snake?

luvofthechase

usually confused
hi there! im fairly new, i was wondering if anyone could explain to me how to go about "poping" to tell sex? as well, i would apreciate an explanation as to how to tell from tail size. i forgot to ask what sex my snake was when i bought him/her a couple weeks ago, and the more knowlegable staff member where i bought him forgot to check (i bought him as soon as he came in to the store!)

Corn Snake Manual discusses these in detail

I don't recommend popping a snake unless you have an experienced hobbyist walk you through the process. If done incorrectly, it can cause permanent damage to the snake.

Tail sexing can be used with older snakes. Search the forum for thread and pics on this practice.

someone else will have to help you with the pop question...

but generally the tail of a male gets smaller more gradually after the vent. a female's tail is much more pronounced and tapers very obviously after the vent.

if you can post pictures, sometimes a lot of the more experienced people can give you a good idea from that.

doesnt mean i intend to DO it, just want to know HOW. as for tail sexing, ive read the more recent posts on it, and most specify the differences, but not which is atrbuted to which.

Thanks stef. thats what i thought, but just wanted to confirm it. my snake is still pretty young, i think hes only about 18" long or so. im pretty new to all this, and i hope that my last post didnt seem rude. Im used to being the authority on forums (im a small animal breeder) and im going to have to get used to being treated like the newbie i am!

hey chase, no problem...

and that last post didn't sound rude to me at all...so hopefully it's not taken that way.

in other news...if you haven't already been recommended it (or don't already own it), grab the corn snake manual by kathy love. you can get it from her website www.cornutopia.com or through amazon.com.

read that a couple of times, and you definitely wont have to worry about looking like a newbie.

lol...good for you!!!

sounds like you're on the right track then!!

good luck with your little one!

The best way to determine sex with a good degree of accuracy is probing.
This is also something best done by someone experienced...and having them walk you through it a couple of times...or some serious damage can be caused.

If you post some pics of the tail from the vent back...from underneath...and from the side...some of the members here could probably visually determine it's sex to a fair degree of accuracy...

ill try and take a pic or 2 tonight, hopefully ill be able to figure out how to post them. i thought though that you couldnt tell when the snake is as young as mine.

It is usually easier when you have multiple snakes...so you can compare...
But I can visually identify all of my hatchlings...although sometimes you will definitely get a surprise.
