i need to increase my humidity and i have tried misting and covering the screen top less than half, i can't get it above 38-39 and she is in shedding

Put in a bigger water bowl and cover almost the entire top of the viv, you only need a quarter inch gap around the sides.

I just read somewhere that if you mist the plastic wrap underneath, that helps, too.

Keep an eye on it- I got Zee's humidity up to 95%- too high.

If you have a heat lamp, that will dry the tank out. You are going to have to mist, or put a humid hide in. As Nanci said, mist underneath the plastic sheet, too, as well as the tank walls. I have a heat lamp on my viv, but the majority of the tank top is covered by plastic. I can keep my humidity at 50% for most of the day by misting in the morning.

I have an acrylic lid with ventillation holes drilled into it on my 20L corn's viv. The humidity in that never drops below fifty, and the humidity in the room itself is about 25%

Maybe investing in a different type of lid for your vivarium is a solution worth pursuing.

When my snake is getting ready to shed or I just can't get good humidity misting I run a cool mist room humidifier. If I keep the doors to the room closed I can get about 40% RH in the room then when I mist can get about 50 - 60% RH.

They cost about 25 bucks in most stores.

whats the best way to check the humidity, so i know if my guage is right?

When you go to the store and buy a humidity gauge, look at the readings on all of them. They should all be pretty close. If one is way off from the others, don't buy it.

Once you have it place in the tank, you may just have to go by faith that the gauge is working. Most are pretty reliable, and don't need to be NASA accurate.

If you mist the tank, don't mist the gauge. The hand on the gauge will shoot way up giving you a false reading.

I like that idea. Did you buy it or make it yourself?

I've been thinking of taking some plastic wood for boat decks and making replacement lids for my Critter Cages.

my humidity gage reads 70% and I can'te get it down, even using a light instead of a uth ( i switched back because it wasn't making a diference) ..... is this a problem?

It's normally rainy and wet where I live...
but is 70% normal? it seems awfully high.

Here in corn snake land (Florida) the outdoor humidity at 8PM is 74%. In my house it is 54%. In Maizey's cage it is 66%. I guess I wouldn't worry about it. It is very common for our outdoor humidity to be in the 90% range, especially at night/early morning.
