Hey guys and gals,

Currently using aspen and having no ill affects, but curious on the possibilities of using hydroton clay balls as substrate. I know there is always the possibilities of ingestion and impaction with any substrate but has anyone had this happen to them?

Here's why: I have humidity issues and if I used it, even in say 1/4 of the tank in a dish or something, I know it would increase the humidity dramatically. I would combat bacteria growth by using boiled sterile water or distilled.

Any thoughts?? Other than waste cleanup I can't think of any. Need some expert experience from the gurus on here!

Also, as far as Aspen is concerned.. what about compacted air sealed bags in a cubish shape? It looks the exact same as the loose bagged stuff with the snake on it but cheaper. Anyone using this instead?
 
I use wal mart aspen when I use aspen. My grandmother brings me at least 10 pounds of newspaper each week. I have enough to last for 2 yers right now. BTW If anyone is in the manassas/NoVA area and needs newspaper PM me. Anyway to increase humidity I would increase water bowl size a bit. That should give the humidity a kick. Or mist the caeg lightly 3x a week that bumps it too. When my snakes are in shed they get misted daily. I hope this helps.

Honestly, I have never even heard of these hydro balls you speak of. But if you're using aspen, I think you should stick with it; it's what a lot of people on here use. And like David said, just increase water bowl size or mist the cage if you need extra humidity. They aren't rain forest snakes, so they don't need a whole lot of humidity to begin with, only when they're shedding. Even so, my snakes' cages humidity levels are (I assume) the same as the room they're in (which isn't very humid at all) and they are all doing fine, and they even shed perfectly.
 
I'm not certain what your humidity levels are but corn snakes don't really need much more then 50% anyway. If you find you aren't up to that level I'd try both options given to you.

My rack rarely gets over 30% humidity. When/if I notice one is about to shed, I put a humid hide in their tub. I haven't had a bad shed in about 2 years.
