I am using a cobra heat mat and I get readings around 78 degrees on top of the aspen and close to 88 inside his hide on the hot side. Is 78 ok on top of the substrate? I think it's way too cold! It goes down to close to 66 degrees at night in my house.

Little secret.....

Most North American colubrids can be kept at room temp with no heat source and no impact. MOF, I've found that it actually seems to reduce stress a bit. IMO it is better to be a little cool than too hot. 78 is fine.

i had the same problem before and i was told that as long as your snake has access to that heat, he will burrow if necessary. if you feel it is too cold, could you add a red/blue bulb above the viv? this might bring the substrate temps up a little.

I use a UTH and a very low wattage red heat light on my vivi's. Both my corns spend most of their time in the cooler parts of the tank. They only spend a small amount of time in the heated portions. So I agree that corns tend to prefer cooler temps anyway. During the summer months I use the UTH only, and during that time I almost never see them use them.

Corns thrive at temperatures in the same areas that humans find comfortable. this means approximately a range of 70-88 F (21-31C) but unlike humans with self-regulating body temperatures, snakes can't sustain all bodily functions if kept at anyone temperature constantly. there are times when they must experience higher or lower temperatures to facilitate natureal functions such as digestion, embryo development, paracite or infection control, as well as spermatogenesis.


with that i dont think you have to much to worry abou with your corn , even though 66 is a pretty cold night, i cover the top of my tank with a towle and i jsut lwave a hole for the light, recently i have cut out a hole with card board and i used that for the space around the heat lamp, and my temp went up about 2 degrees drom its regular night temperature.

Yeah I am not too worried about it. I treid putting a light on top and it shot up to the mid 80's ..which is where all my tanks are pretty much at.

Mine has been restin at aobut 75-about 80 that is at the warm end, but i can not do to much about it considering were going into the midst of winter, so im not to worried about mine either

80-ish is about perfect for all mine. I usually turn the UTH pad up a notch after they eat to help w/ digestion. You guys have to worry about keeping vivs hot enough...In Az I have to worry about keeping the tanks cool enough even in the winter. Sucks... but I'll never have to worry about a blizzard (unless is this the scaly kind)
