I can't believe we did it! Uromastyx Geyri babies!!!

Susielea

Lily
Well as the title says, we are a little shocked, but really really happy, that we actually managed to incubate and hatch the eggs, well, one so far, that our Uromastyx Geyri produced at the end of April this year, because by all accounts they can be really difficult to hatch if the exact conditions are not met during incubation.

All I can say is, we must have done something right, because this is what we found late last night and how it progressed throughout today...............

I hope you enjoy :D

What a wonderfully cute little one Sue! It's always amazing to me to see little ones coming out of the egg like that and into a bright brand new world, it must take them a lot of work.

OMG, it's so tiny!!! Wow- I would be SO nervous now!!! What size viv are you going to set the babies up in? How on earth can you get a temp gradient? I have to go read my book!!

Thank you all for the compliments and congrats! :)

Very very interesting, Sue.

Eric, I thought you may have guessed what was cooking in our incubator, but if you did you didn't let on, so thank you! :D

This little one had our hearts racing every time we checked the incubator, as it hatched upside down, which is apparently normal, and looked dead most of the time, talk about palpitations, I thought Ron was going to have a heart attack! ;)

Nervous???? I'm building a new house, out of bricks! ;)

We're running a 3ft viv at the moment with 120*F basking spot, 80-85*F cool end, using full spectrum UV tube and a spotlight for basking and so far it's maintaining well. If that doesn't hold, we've got a 4ft viv ready to go, we just didn't want to start them in that due to the amount of space, but we'll see :)

Nice one Sue........ Way to go..... Big congrats.

Thanks Mike, that means a lot!!! Have you seen any captive bred and hatched in the UK by any chance, as I've not had a lot of time online just lately???

I suppose I'd better post them on the UK forums too, huh? But I'll have to get around to that tomorrow, I'm running on empty at the moment ;)

So cool. I mean, SOOO COOOL!!! I love my Uromastyx, and that baby is just too perfect. Man, I would be ecstatic to have successfully hatched out babies. You should be very proud of yourself, that's amazing!!!

That's a neat set of pics.
How many eggs do you have?

Thanks Alan, she laid 10 eggs total but two were duds from the start. We've had 8 healthy looking eggs, see pic below, all the way through, so we're hoping they all will hatch :)

Many thanks Michael, we are ecstatic, in fact Ron, my husband whose babies these really are, is having a huge problem sleeping at the moment. He keeps checking the situation through the window in the incubator every hour or so, tee hee :D

Oh, he's a cute little guy (or gal)! How absolutely adorable!

Sounds like your electric bills are gonna go up a bit if all 8 of them hatch :).

Totally awesome to see that hatching process.
Now please excuse my ignorance, I know Uros', but what is a Geyri?

Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks for the compliment Roland! :D

Uromastyx is the Genus and Geyri is the Species name. These ones are also known as Saharan Uromastyx among other things. The ones we have are the red phase.

Here's a link to Deer Fern Farms website that shows most all the different species of Uro, that will hopefully explain the differences better than I can :)

Thanks again to all for the congrats!

We now have 2 more babies out and in their tank and another two nearly there but still in the incubator. That leaves three more to pip :)

Here's few more pics, first up is pip/hatchling #2

Thank You for both the explanation and the Link Sue.

Just as a matter of interest, what do baby Uros' cost over there?
I am interested in getting into this species and want to know if pricing here in SA, is on par.

I wish you every success with these little Dinosaurs.

Thank you Roland!

Privately I've seen babies priced from 100 GBP upwards and retail from 150 GBP upwards but they were WC (wild caught), obviously CB (captive bred)would be more expensive along with the lesser known or harder to obtain species and I've seen some priced at, I think it was around 700 a pair!

I hope that makes sense, it just didn't look right whichever way I typed it ;)
