I found this guy in my pond :(

I thought he was dead at first, and yeah I know he looks dead in the picture, but he closed his eyes and started snuggling into the blanket the moment I wrapped him up.
He's in my garage right now, I just couldn't leave him there...
He's most likely going to die, but at least he'll be warm and out of the pond...

Well despite the fact that this has 66 views and no actual comments...update.

Good news bad news scenario.
Good news: He's doing waay better and is moving around a lot.
Bad news: At least one of his wings is waaay broken and he trips over it and falls onto his back and does the kinda turtle on its back thing to get himself back up again.

So now I really don't know what to do with him because we've got tons of cats prowling the neighborhood, but I'm 99.9% sure that animal control will just put him down...

So right now he's in my old rat's cage with a thing of water, and a bowel of seeds millet and mealworms.

Awe, poor guy! He's an adult. Can you call a wildlife rescue? At least they can fix him or humanely PTS him.

Well there's the humane society zoo that I mentioned the other day, and one time I found a baby starling and my parents made me give it up to them >_< They have contact with a wild bird rehabilitation center.

It's kinda far away though, I think I'm gonna wait and see if he makes it the night first before subjecting him to the car ride trauma.

Is it a crow? It might be a fledged baby. Looks really small to me, which is what made me think that.
They are really clumsy when they fledge, I found two (years apart) when I was a kid which seemed to have broken wings. I kept them for a few days and fed them and both seemed to get stronger and were able to fly away. Hopefully this guys just shaken up as well.

Sorry, reread your posts.. If it's obviously broken, he probably would be put down. If you want to keep him, he could possibly have a decent life but with a HUGE ammount of patience on your end. For one thing, he's not likely to get tame soon. He'll need a much bigger cage or freedom in the house, and that's a BIG bird to be running and pooping around the place.. Nobody would blame you for not wanting to go through all that.

Best of luck to you, whatever you decide. I just recently lost my second starling and was completely heartbroken.. It's a heck of a thing trying to help them.

A rehabber might fix him up. That's some sort of blackbird or grackle. The reason I say that is that, even without a scale to see how big he is, you can see he has a nice, long fully-developed tail. A crow would have a short stubby tail, much broader, as a youngster.

If you have any vet wrap around, you can immobilize his wing by wrapping it in a folded position against his body. Are you saying it is broken because it is dropped, or have you actually felt breaks?

I've already figured out it was a grackle but the fact that you guys think that too just confirms it more for me.

I haven't actually palpated a break Nanci, I am just assuming, I'm trying to just let him get his wits back about him before forcing him to be man handled by me.
But its the fact that he/she literally trips on its wing gets flipped over and flops pitifully on it's back untill it manages to right itself makes me think it's more than just clumsy.

I'm going to call the humane zoo tomorrow.
Of course they told me with my baby starling that they sent him to rehabilitation...but who knows :(

I feel your pain, I was heartbroken when I relinquished my baby, and it still haunts me to this day to know I might have just sent him to his doom.
They work their way into your heart so quickly...

I still won't get rid of his picture.

I'm gonna refill his food dish and change his water one more time before going to bed.
Hope to see him well in the morning. Thanks J9

good luck with your wild friend

Can you get some actual worms like earthworms or night crawlers gross but bugs? It is surprising how birds can get back to normal. even with a damaged wing perhaps some time, food, care and he may be able to be released. Can you create a safe enclosure outside for him with shade? then he will be kinda in nature while recuperating and it may solve your pets going after him.
Im just beginning to learn about snakes but when I was a kid I had many injured animals that with care went back into the wild. btw it should be fairly obvious if the wing is actually broken often fledglings carry their wings oddly. please update tomorrow
