I got a SUNBEAM for my Birthday!

Happy Birthday! What an awesome present, does he have a name yet??

That post regarding their information was great to read too....I love learning about new species (and especially such beautiful ones)!!

Very pretty snake..I heard they get stressed easily and it's best not to handle them..sort of one of those look but don't touch types..is this true? and I also read that their lifespan isn't that long..only like 10 years or so...

Ed, thank you sooooo much for all the information. I am glad I was on the right track with her care. Looks like I just need to add a few extras like the cork and feeding area.

Nope no name for it yet. I won't name it until I have officially probed it. Once I know for sure what it is I will have to see about trying to find a cb one out there to raise for breeding. It would be nice to help keep these guys from being wc.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes and complements. :dancer:

What an excellent birthday present!! They are so cool!! Great info, Ed, nice to see you posting.

We used to get these from time to time at one of the stores I used to work in. I was always completely enchanted. They're beyond beautiful, and they FEEL amazing. Congrats on a great birthday gift!

Kim,
I am glad you got this snake and it was well established. The problem with them is most are WC and only live for a few months in captivity. Only a few people I know own them. I went in on a shipment of them with some friends and the entire batch (5 snakes) did not survive. While one of my friend's has had her's for over 15 years. Brad aka the Snakeguru has a nice girl himself.

You also should've picked up the pair of White Lips as well. ;)

What technically is a Sunbeam? It's beautiful and congratS! Oh, and Happy Birthday!

here you go.. from wiki
The Xenopeltidae are a monotypic family of snakes created to the genus Xenopeltis, which is found in Southeast Asia. Its members are known for their highly iridescent scales. Currently, two species are recognized and no subspecies.[3]

OH.. So, they are their own kind of snake. Lol I was thinking a ratsnakish. But that works.. Thanks Jim.

EXACTLY! They have an amazing feel to them, super slippery. Descriptions don't do it justice though.. something that has to be experienced.

im glad i was of some help i was worried i might have rambled or got a bit obscure :).

il answer a couple of points raised if i may, re handling they take to it very well, thier not a nervous animal like a king or milk, they get used to it and are very trustworthy, a calm animal will rarely do the holy trinity, poop, musk and bite. the only handling caution is probably not to handle them a day before thier going to get fed and a day after. as for lifespan i suspect that they can be a very long lived species and are actually a lot older at capture than most wildcaught species, from the growth rates of mine since birth i think large imported adults are at least 5 years old and maybe older. very very few juveniles are ever captured and survive the process. as for death rate among wc animals its more down to the importer than the animal, they are a very adaptable animal and if they survive thier parasite load and initial captive period they will do well in experienced or sensible hands. if thier appeal was more widespread i think a captive population could easily be established, on a related note my pair have been showing breeding behaviour but i think thier still a bit young yet at 2.5yrs old.

congrats again and happy birthday

My one question... Does owning them ever turn into "owning a pet box of dirt"? You know what I mean? When owning a Cobalt Blue tarantula, it was like having a "pet hole" cause you NEVER saw it. Would owning one of these be the same??? Except at feeding time, of course.

Any snake could end up being a hider...even a corn or ball python..It just all depends on the snake's personality and how comfortable it feels in it's enclosure..
