I Got My New Adult! YaY (Please Read)

We Can't All Be Smart.
hey everyone i got a new adult corn the other day of a kid who was going to university so didn't have enough time to keep the snake no longer.

anyway i got this snake for £50 with box and heatmat.

the snake was unfortunately kept in a small VIV (a starter kit). the snakes around a year old and i think its an anery I'm not sure please comment if i am wrong.

i have some pictures but they are not very good ones because i didn't want to Handel the snake for to long due to it probably being nervous enough as it is.

anyway even though the snakes been kept in a small Viv it seams to be in perfect half (on the outside). it apparently shed yesterday (before i got him or her). also it eats well apparently.

anyway here are some pictures of the new corn enjoy

Is there anyway someone could tell me if this snake is a Male Or Female?

also is this snake an anery like i think it is?

Looks anery to me, though its hard to see the neck area. Anerys have some yellow on their necks as adults, charcoals don't. Since you have other snakes it'd be good to quarantine the new one . I hope you have him in a bigger viv now? Nice looking snake!

yeah it has got a slight bit of yellow on the patterns on the neck. thats what made me think it was an anery.

and yes i have got a bigger VIV theres no way on earth i would have hept the poor thing in there for any longer.

cheers for your feedback.

It looks like a anery to me, a really nice one at that.

charcoals normally do tend to not have the yellow that most anerys develop but that is not a way to tell if it is a charcoal or not because charcoals can develop the yellow to.

cool i always thought charcoles were a light shade of cray and black. i will try get some good pictures tommrow possibly the day after. i want to leave the snake to settle down in her or his new home befor i start handeling it.
them pictures were only taken when i was changing the VIVs around.

can anyone tell what sex this snake is? i tryed to get some pictures of the tail for you. they are sadely not very good ones though i didnt want to put stress on the snake so i just took them quickly.

i have a feeling its a male. the tail goes stright down into a point at the end (kind of chunky) under the snake were the vent is it suddenly drops down a little and carrys on.

wood chips at the moment thats what the previous owner was using and i normally use so works well. i was thinking of changing to aspen shaving though when i find a shop that actualy stocks them or has them in stock. basic headmat and fish tank setup with a water dish and a hideout (no logs)
i only got the snake about 5pm though to i have not had time to really go out get some logs and treat them. i will do tommrow morning though.

I thought the difference between charcoals and anerys was that charcoals lacked the yellow as adults? At least that's what I kind of understood from the corn snake manual's description of the two morphs. I'm no expert when it comes to charcoals though!
The only way to be 100% sure of gender is to probe them or actually put them in a breeding situation and see how they react, but the rule of thumb is that the female's tails will taper more suddenly just past the vent and the males will stay thick for a bit before tapering. It's kind of hard to tell from your pic but to me it does look more like a male.
I use and reccommend aspen shavings over the wood chips.

yeah the pictures were not the best pictures due to me not wanting to put to much stress on the snake.

if you head over the the Photo Section of this website i posted some clearer pictures.

My Charcoal certainly has an amount of yellow on her checks/neck. As do my Aneries and Ghost! The difference between Charcoals and Aneries would be that they have different genetics! :bird: I have noticed that my Aneries appear darker then the Charcoal however.

SMS is correct in that they only 100% accurate way to sex is via probeing/popping. Even popping can result in error if a young corn is unusually good at controlling his organs. :) I've had breeders tell me they sex they're snakes visually...I refuse to purchase their stock because I am completely aware that that particular method isn't 100% accurate. I would be furiouse if the female I purchased turned out male!

Hey it turns out it didnt shead the day befor i got it. i no this ebcause this morning it shead its skin. :) its a very nice light silver / gray color and a nice solid black looks really nice. it does have yellow on the neck still though i wil try take some desent pictures tonight the snake is looking pritty settled down. it all depends on how the snake is though weather i do or dont.
