So last week I purchased and brought home a lovely juvenile Brazilian Rainbow Boa. Now he's pretty calm when handling (I handled him in the shop and then briefly while transporting him to his enclosure), and doesn't seem as bad as people make rainbow boas out to be. Well today was feeding day, and I put him in a separate bin, gave him a fuzzy, he took it, okay great. Well while he was "killing" the little mouse I guess he got scared at some point and let go. He was still wrapped around the fuzzy so I pulled it out to try and reintice him. Well he bit my hand as I was trying to get the fuzzy with the tongs. He bit me and returned to his coil before I could jump, but when I did react I was THOROUGHLY shocked. Afterwards he struck the fuzzy defensively so I just put it in his enclosure along with him and he ate it. So what's your guys' first snake bite experience?

I haven't had very many bites and they've all been from baby or subadult corns. I've had a few feeding bites, where they strike and release and it always startles me, but doesn't really hurt. My 'favorite' bite, though, was from one of my corns who is a crazy feeder and he bit and coiled around my arm and didn't want to let go. I wish I had taken a picture. Generally though, even if my hands smell like mice, all my corns are gentle and usually can differentiate between an actual mouse and mousey smelling hands.

I don't really blame him for biting me, I'd be scared too if somebody ripped open my hide while I was sleeping, grabbed me, put me in a cardboard box, and waved a chicken leg over my head.

I swear Olivia and I are sisters separated at birth. I did the same thing, smelled like mice and decided to hold my 950g boy before washing my hands AND it wasn't even his feeding day! WHAM! I got teeth sunk in, coiled around the wrist, and blood pouring everywhere. But I couldn't stop staring in amazement! I blew in his face and he wasn't digging that, and let go slightly, but I did gently pinch his jaws and the top part disengaged, and I unfortunately had to drag the bottom teeth across the skin to get him to let go. Jim freaked, I am glad I didn't show him the "before" when blood was running down my wrist. He's so funny, it just makes me know how much he loves me.
