I don't have a temperature checker so i check with my finger i poke the glass the the heating is under to see how hot it is. It is a zoo med brand. And when i touch it it burns my finger so i am relying on my lamp for now or should i stick with the lamp only?
Here r some pictures:

this is how close the lamp is to the mesh

The UTH will run way too hot unless you buy a thermostat for it. You can get a general idea of what you need here. I've heard good things about the Helix, Ranco, and Herpstat thermostats.
Another thing you absolutely need is a digital indoor/outdoor probe thermometer. You can get them fairly cheap ($8-12) at Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, or Lowe's. (You'll want something like this) If you don't have a thermometer, you won't know how hot your viv is getting. That is an absolutely critical piece of equipment.
Until you get those 2 items, I would turn off the UTH, move the lamp higher up, and keep a close eye on your snake.

You dont even need the lamp if you have that Thermostat and probe thermometer. I completely agree with Suzy's post, although I might recommend radio shack's probe thermometer, mine works great

Oops I forgot-one more thing. Keep your water bowl on the cool side-in other words the opposite side of the UTH. The reason is you dont want the cool water and the heat source on the same side, as it could crack the glass in the aquarium
