Maybe I was talking without all the information. I have always been told my my management that the profit was never in the pets.
I happen to work at a petsmart that I've seen spend 100s of dollars in vet bills on a beardie to save its life. Then adpot it out to employees for a penny because it needed a leg amputated and covered the vet costs (It came to us from sunpets with its leg crushed). Had no reason to believe my petcare manager would lie when I asked how much they payed.
(Only petsmart I know of with management that would approve that kind of care btw)
But I still feel that it dosen't matter if she bought it or not. There are plenty of people that will support it regardless, unfortunately.

People will continue to buy from this big chain stores. However, out of respect for a living creature, most have opted out of buying from them. The more people that begin using that frame of mind and get more educated the less people will buy from these stores. There is always that group that want the cheapest animal and sadly the big chain stores cater to them, along with the wrong information. 9 times out of 10 the animal will die or be pawned off to bleeding hearts trying to save them.
Most stores will take the animals to the vet, or have a vet that comes by to examine the animals. The question remains, will they actually spend more than the visit fee?
I refuse to go to Petco, Petsmart or Petland in our city. I am one of those bleeding hearts and I refuse to give money to places that keep their animals so horribly.

Most pet stores, including the big chain ones buy the animals next to nothing, especially from wholesale places. They usually to anywhere from a 2x mark up to a 3x mark up. That is with reptiles, fish, birds and mammals.
I have "rescued" corns from petco. I got really lucky but after some education, I swore I would never buy another animal from them nor will I buy supplies from them.

As much as I know most people hate to hear it, I too work at a pet store (large retail chain that isn't Petsmart but by my contract, I'm not allowed to talk bad about them, so that's my obvious hint). It is COMPANY policy that snakes are to be fed pinkies once a week. If I were you, I'd take the feeding records and go straight to corporate with it. I'd also be absolutely sure to tell them that they were "feeding" crickets and let them know the outcome. I'm assuming that it wasn't acting as if it was in good health when you got it, and you should let them know. It is also against company policy to leave a sick animal on the sales floor and if it doesn't receive medical attention within 24 of being pulled off the sales floor, the manager is supposed to face a write up or possible loss of employment. Make sure they know you're upset and going to tell friends/families about it. It's still going to be a pet store, but if you can get the management in trouble (and trust me, they at least hear Every complaint that gets sent to corporate), it might scare them in to educating their employees enough so that the animals are receiving proper care.
Also, I'm so sorry to hear about that snake. It astonishes me how the small animal manager and store manager still have a job after such poor treatment to that little guy.
