So... I have a temporary kitten. I have, for the interim, decided to call him Hawthorn, though his true name is Ayamari (means "apology"). That is because I consider him to be the universe's apology for a truly hellish day at work yesterday.

My manager didn't call my home number to leave me a message despite knowing that I rarely check my cellphone.... so I didn't know that in addition to medicating the boarding cats, I also needed to do kennel in both the am and pm shift. I walked into the hospital around, oh, 2pm and the first thing to greet me was the sound of a fluid pump alarm. I had two hospitalised cats on IV fluids, both of whom fubar'd their catheters. I then spent 45 minutes calling literally everyone who works there to find someone to help me replace the catheters (one was clotted, the other had ripped the fluid line from their arm, leaving an open and thankfully clotted catheter behind....). Only problem? Everyone was out of town. I was stuck, at work, completely alone, with cats who were very sick and needed to be on fluids. I finally called my sister-in-law who is in the vet-tech program with me and she came and held them while I placed new catheters. My sil is the best person ever.

On the way home though (4.5 hours later.....) I stopped off at petsmart to buy some cat litter and food. Exiting the store, I was casually glancing around and I saw... a kitten. I had my dog with me at the time, so getting ahold of the kitten was fun, but in short order I was driving home with calm kitten in my lap and my dog in the front seat.

My dog has never been cuter. The following is a conversation version of the ride home.

"Mommy I wanna lick the kitten."
"No, you may not lick the kitten, for I am driving right now."
"But mommy, I *really* wanna lick the kitten!"
"Tough cookies."

Finally at a stop light I let Kumo lick the new addition, and the kitten batted as his nose and wanted to play, so there was face licking and kitten-toes licking and Kumo was perfectly pleased with himself. Then I had to continue driving.

"Mommy.... I wanna lick the kitten MORE!"

*grins*

So, little Hawthorn is going into work with me today to get checked out. And he'd bloody well better be negative for FIV/FeLV or else I'm going to stab the universe in the face. Provided the test goes well, he gets a basic exam, a capstar to kill the fleas, and some dewormer. Then, we will begin the attempt to adopt him out to a client. A good one. O_< *fierce*

The fleas are the most important thing at this point, he's actually somewhat anemic from his flea load, and I don't think my soapy-water bath killed as many of them as I would have liked.

So yeah, just wanted to share the news 'cause I adore kittens and I promise to add pictures tonight. He's a predominantly black-tabby.. and he's also a smoke! So handsomes!

Adorable story...and I love the "conversation" between you & your dog; I have loads of conversations with my cats, and crazily enough, they respond in their own meow-language. :) I love it! Good luck on Ayamari/Hawthorn; may all be well & s/he find a happy, loving home! :)

He sounds so adorable--! A friend of a friend found a tiny black kitten in her bushes, and guess who ended up with him?? He fit in the palm of my hand. After a vet check, we let him stay. He's now about 8 mos. old and our favorite of three cats; we named him "Spooky". He knows how to push our buttons, that's for sure, it's just the cuteness!!

My sister-in-law does feral rescue at the College of Charleston campus--they try to find homes for the adoptable ones, and capture/spay/neuter/vaccinate the adults and release, also provide feeding areas. If you let a neutered/spayed cat back into it's territory, it will keep out other cats and therefore no new populations of cats--at least that's the idea.

Please post pics, would love to see him (your doggie, too)!!

Speaking of resisting cute-ness... i've been researching pet skunks.

This can NOT end well. I'm sure of it.

LOL! A couple who were my parents friends had a pet skunk, I loved to visit and hold it. I also have a pic of me in fifth grade posing with a skunk that was brought to school for that purpose. Anyway, good luck!

Very cute story..sorry to hear you had such a hectic day but at least it ended with a cute rescue and hopefully all goes well and you'll be able to find the little one a new home :0)
