I am a brand new snake owner. I rescued two baby amels from a co-worker's teenage son. He brought them home without permission, and was not able to properly care for them. I didn't know at the time that they shouldn't be kept in the same viv. The 2 snakes came with a Zilla Critter Cage 20 Gallon Long. It's dimensions are L: 30.00  W: 12.00  H: 12.00. I can't afford to purchase another viv right now, and this should be plenty big enough for them to each get their own side. BUT I want to be able to remove the divider down the road when the snakes grow up. By then they will each have their own viv. I know that certain things can be toxic to snakes, so I really don't know what I should use. This is how it looks right now. They are cohabiting till I can figure this out. Any ideas? Thanks!

I dunno if it's safe, but Plexiglass and some non toxic caulking??? :shrugs:


Also, the top part of that Aquarium/Viv there's just some caulking/hot glue holding that black trim on up top, you could use something to wear it away and pop it off and use a inch think piece of wood (the thickness will help it from slopping around. [diagonally anyway.]) Then it maybe possible to put the black trim back on top Hot glue/super Glue outside edges and put a screw on each side of the lip into the board (if it has a lip, all mine do).

Only two Solutions i can come up with, I am sure others will have much better/safer Ideas.
 
Thanks, I was thinking plexi glass and caulking as well. Now to figure out where to get it from. I would have to buy it pre-cut. Hmmm
 
Home Depot, Local Hardware Store, Lowes. If Local hardware store doesn't have it, they should be able to point you int he direction of who would have it.
 
Do you think a vinyl tile would be bad? A 12 x 12 tile is already the perfect size, and cheap.
 
Why don't you save yourself some work and just go out and pay a Sterilite tub for the second snake. Make sure you buy Binder Clips to secure the lid.

Sterilite tub costs $7.00
Binder Clips costs $3.00

You will also need a heat mat and rheostat but both of this can be used on the new tank you plan on getting in the future.

UTH from Amazon costs $12.00
Rheostat Wal-mart costs $10.00 (I would recommend getting a T-stat. You can get one on Amazon like this for $27.00.)
 
Yes, I forgot that a 10 Gal Aquarium only cost 10-12 bucks at most places and that would be just fine.
 
Holy crap are they really?? I have to check that out...but for the OP...get a piece of plexi cut...you can usually get it pretty cheap at Home Depot or Lowes...sometimes they have a piece of scrap large enough so you can save some that way. Then just get some clear caulking sealant. It's perfectly fine as long as you let it dry before putting them back in..don't want them stuck to it...

I did it to a 10 gallon...not a great pic, but you get the idea....

Why don't you just leave them together till they get bigger? I keep mine in pairs and had no problems. I will seperate them when they are old enough to breed.
 
Well that's what my husband suggested too, but a lot of people here think that's a bad idea. And I don't know what their sexes are. I was told that they're male and female, but I don't know how reliable that info was.
 
I'm not a breeder. I got 6 corns and I'm not sure of their sexes, but I have never seen them fight and they stay in the same hide together even so I got 2 hides in a cage so they could split up.
 
Ya, the reason you don't keep them together...apart from the slight possibility they could become cannibalistic, if for monitoring their actions. If they are separate then you know if one of them all the sudden stops pooping or has a bowel obstruction...or on the other end, you know if one regurges. If they are housed together and you find a regurge, you are out of luck because you don't know who's regurge it is so you have to treat them both.
 
In addition to Josh's answer, you also have to treat both if one get's sick, such as an URI or mites. Mites are hard enough to get rid of on one snake, let alone two.

Space is a little bit of a problem here at the moment. If I can keep them in the one viv, but divided, that is my best option for the time being. Eventually I want to get a big enough shelf setup so that I can have 2 20gal long aquariums with the least amount of floor space. I will be saving up for my long term plans for their housing.

from Amazon.com and they will be here this week. What I was planing on doing is placing the heat pad in the middle of the tank, where it will be divided, that way I only need the one heat source for now.

I know I sound like I am being cheap, but I had no idea that I couldn't keep them together when I got them. I have learned so much about snake keeping from this forum. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this website. Thanks for all your help everyone. :)
 
My dilemma has been solved by stumbling upon a tank sale at Petco. I went in there for fish supplies, and they had their tanks 50% off. I went ahead and bought one, so now I am just waiting on my second set of UTH and thermostat to get here from Amazon.com. I will post pics when I eventually get everything setup. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. :)
 
Try looking on your local Craigslist. People are always selling tanks for cheap. I even have a few times. Just make sure you clean and sterilize them first. I got a 20L with a lid for 15 bucks once.
