I need to know

I suggest getting the Cornsnake Manual by Kathy Love and reading it thru. You can also go all thru this forum and read postings. Most of the questions you have are answered somewhere on here. I would also suggest that if you want to save money on purchasing a snake that you try a reptile show, or a local breeder. I've purchased snakes from both places and have been very lucky with them. However, that having been said, you also take your chances especially at reptile shows. You never know what you're going to get unless it happens to be from someone who's well-known such as the Love's or Rich Z or some others. Keep in mind that many people are at the shows selling suplus snakes off, and some might not have a feeding history. Do a little research and then buy your future pet. They are great pets! They still are a big responsibility.

Meg,

Would you mind clarifying this statement? While I agree that there shady sellers around, there are also many fantastic small-time breeders out there (including many members around here). Most are knowledgeable, reputable, interested in educating buyers and committed to the propagation and future of this hobby. Shows are also great places to make contacts with locals that can be a source for answers to your questions.

No question about it Cav, shows are a great place to get some nice snakes at reasonable prices. I got very lucky when I got mine there. She's awesome. I'm just saying, that if you don't know anything (which at the time I knew very little) you could get a snake from someone who doesn't have any feeding records or any info at all. You don't even know if the snake will eat. I could have very easily gotten taken by someone there, but fortunately, I didn't. I think there is a huge benefit in purchasing from a known, reputable breeder in that most offer a feed guarantee, and you have some way of getting a refund or replacement if something happens to the snake. I wouldn't trade the chance to go to a show though, or the great snake I got there either!

So someone comes to this forum, a Cornsnake forum, and asks questions about owning a cornsnake. Immediately he is jumped on and insulted. Why? Some folks need to back off and relax a bit. At least he is here trying to get some information before making the purchase. That is much more than the impulse pet shop buyers are doing. It must be nice to be so knowledgeable as to be able to judge someones worthiness to own a snake based on a single post on an internet forum. Maybe instead of being rude and nasty to people we could try educating them. Some people are natural researchers. The have no trouble getting online and finding the information that they need. Not everyone is like that.

As far as asking about where to get a cheap snake is concerned, I did not see him asking where to buy an unhealthy, parasite infested, right out of the egg snake. When I buy something I look for the best deal I can find. I want to pay as little money as possible. That does not mean I want to sacrifice quality, it means I wan't to save money if I can. Unfortunately not all of us have unlimited resources to be able to pay any amount of money to get something. There is nothing wrong with trying to get something inexpensive as long as you are careful to pay just as much as you need to in order to get a quality product. In spite of what some folks around here seem to think, it is possible to get a quality cornsnake for a cheap price. I don't understand why folks judge or belittle those that try and do it.

I liked the comment about buying a hatchling right out of the egg. I just bought 7 that way. You might want to email Rich and let him know what a crappy breeder he is to sell them this way. :)

The point of this long post, my apologies, is that we need to back off sometimes and try to help people. I was under the impression that this is one of the main reasons this board is here. Just remember, not everyone is an expert. Some people are ignorant. Applaud them for trying to learn and help them if you want to. If you don't, at least try not to belittle them for inquiring.

thank you darin
i completely agree, well said. my friend.
this is the perfect place to learn and ask questions, like everyone already has stated.
ive had my corns for about 8 years now and have come across all sorts of problems with them, and was paranoid about them, lol, since ive found this place im a lot more confident what im doing with them, and i know what signs to look for in a unhealthy animal. at the moment very unfortunately one of my females does have a major eye problom but as i noticed it immedietely shes gonna be fine, got her the correct treatment and shes now under the best vets care around this area. shes getting some extremely good care in the correct manner with no stress put upon her.
good luck with finding a new little one. i love looking about at all the different kinds of corns ya can get. your gonna love it. over the years i just adore them even more than i ever thought i could. lol. now im gonna stop rambling. :)
