I had a rat escape she is a young adult got out of a hole 1.2 x 1". This is huge problem for me. As some may know I quilt, I have so much fabric in my house (it's another crazy addcition), not to mention furniture.
Any suggestions on a home made rat catcher. I have three cats and a dog you would think one of them would have found her, but no they're napping.:shrugs: susang

I would see if you can find a live trap at grange or somewhere, how tame was she? If you can entice her with food will she let you pick her up? Sorry that sucks, I hope you find her before cats do...

Semi tame, she was in with an evil step-mom, yesterday her sibs went to grange to be sold as pets. She had a little nick on her ear, probably from evil step-mom, so I didn't take her. I'm sure she'll show up some way or the other and when she does she will probably scare the pee out of me.

I've had several incidents like yours over the years, and what has always worked for me is to put an enclosed box (with a small opening) containing some smelly food on the floor (if possible along a wall in the room where the rat escaped), and leave it over night. They go in the box looking for the food and decide to stay there because they think it's a secure hideout instead of a rat-trap.
Good luck capturing the rat.

Logan has a good idea. Or try putting the old cage with the old litter in it out where the rat could get in it. It may be attracted to the smell of something safe and secure.

I have used a small live trap for the kids hamsters that have escaped and gotten then everytime before the cats. Good luck!
