In heat???

My Carolina Sidney has always been happy to roam his viv in front of anyone, very relaxed to be handled 1-2 times a week, eats once a week and rarely misses a feed (missed a couple in shed processes). He sheds fine and regularly too. He used to hide after eating but hasn't bothered even that for months, he has been less active the last month and then these last couple days is just going nuts... Round and round and trying to push the glass and escape and head butting the glass too. He is also flicking his tongue more than usual. But he ate fine today and I cleaned and disinfected everything today too. The only comments I can see anywhere for this behaviour is on here about snakes being on heat? Never heard of this before can anyone tell me if this sounds right, if I need to do anything and how long it will last as I am worried he will hurt himself!!! Sidney is approx 18 months, I have had him just over a year.

Ah yes, love is in the air! This is normal behavior, and I think it is worse for the females. I also think that pheromones take a big part in this behavior, last spring most people's corns went nuts in the spring, trying to mate. My un-bred females were nasty and rude, they struck at me and did laps around the tank moving all the substrate to the middle. Two of the females laid slugs so unless you are 100% sure Sidney is a male, you might want to make a lay box just in case.

Thank you smigon. They sexed him in the pet shop when I brought him at about 4/5 months old so should be fine on that one! How long until he calms down though because if he carrys on I may have to remove most of his accessories as he has tried jumping off his climbing things and just falls?!

This could last a few weeks or a few months. It all depends how their hormones are acting.

As for falling, falling from any height in the viv will not hurt them. They are pretty hardy but it is usual to fall sometimes.

This happened with our snow corn last year. He started going nuts about three nights ago. All over his viv, up his trees--go, go, go. Lasted about four weeks last year so I am anticipating the same thing. Absolutely bonkers.
