xerxes

addict
okay so in woodshoop class at school i'm making a larger viv for xerxes. but that will leave me with an empty aquarium. i'm thinking that i mignt as well fill it up with annother pet. so i thought i'd ask you people what a good, easy to care for, somewhat cheep pet i should get. it'll have to fit in a 3 foot long X 1 foot wide X 1.5 feet tall aqrarium with a screen top. i dont want to spend too much but just asking for advice. thanks

I filled my 2 most recent empty vivs with kenyan sand boas... I'd also suggest another corn snake or... fish? lol IDK, what do you like?

sry i probably should have clarified more of what i was looking for. i want either a snake or a lizzard. but it cant get too big where it wont fit in the old aquarium when it grows. just anything thats cool looking that wont be too hard to care for.

king snakes are about the same size as corn snakes, maybe get a little longer. as for the kenyan sand boas, they actually i believ only get up to 2 feet. maybe 4 feet. dont take my word on that one though.. i cant remember. its one or the other i do know that.

as for lizards, um mabye be a leopard gecko, im not really up to date on some good lizards to keep though. sorry

California Kings are nice. Very similar care needs to a corn and they only get about 3-4 feet long.

I like ball pyhons but they aren't very active in their vivs and some call them "boring." I think they're beautiful and mine is very active and friendly when I handle him.

Both would fit easily into that size tank when full grown.

so between a kenyan sand boa, a kingsnake, and a ball python, wich would be the easiest and coolest to have?

I would go for a kingsnake, but you would have to choose which kind based on finances and personal preference. Cali kings are great, but so are many of the other species...MBK, Thayeri, grayband, all the multiple other tri-colored varieties, etc. Then you have the milksnakes as well. And of course, you also have the option of one of the multiple hybrids, both king X king, king X milk and king X corn. One of my favorite things to do is to browse the classifieds in kingsnake.com (yeah, I know...I'll have hubby spank me for even mentioning that site). Also check out the non-corn classifieds on this site and Fauna as well. That tank is large enough for a member of quite a number of snake species. You just need to find one that you think you'll really like.

yeah, um king snakes would probably be the easiest and coolest.. ball pythons are pretty cool, but the humidity and temperature has to be quite a bit higher than a corn snake.

personally i dont like sand boas. they are small, and well just arent visually appealing to me.. just my opinion though.

You could also consider getting a gecko. They are easy to take care of and relatively inexpensive. Plus they eat crickets and meal worms which are cheaper than mice. So, also another good choice, but another snake would definitely have benefits too.

If I were you I'd geta corn snake... hehe. Cause I want one.

It has a bad "reputation" for something; don't know the whole deal with it but I rarely hear good things. :shrugs:

Anyway... If I were you I would get a male ball python ('cause they're small) :D
Or a group of geckos (like leopard or crested).

as for KS.com just follow the good ole buyer be ware idea. A lot of good breeders will post on there, but far more poor/missleading articles are usually found.

Not a bad site, just take caution before buying as with anything you purchase.

okay, thank you all for your advice, i've narrowed it down to either a corn, king, or milk snake. still looking around, thanks all.

As already mentioned, it's "buyer beware" in the classifieds section. The forum section is a whole other story. Lets just say that if you aren't "in" with the major posters and treat them like gods, than you may easily find yourself banned just for voicing a different opinion, even if it's correct and they're wrong.
