Installing Thermostat

The guy at my local reptile store who keeps a very nice store and breeds etc. said that he puts the probe for the thermostat in the middle of the UTH underneath the tank instead of in the tank (but still checks the temperature under the substrate inside the tank with digital thermometer to find the right setting).

Does anyone else do this or see a problem with it? It sounds like a lot cleaner way to do it and keeps the tank a little more natural. And even if the temperature is different underneath, setting it with digital thermometer in the tank should still lead to the right temp by all logic. Thanks in advance for any opinion/experience.

Well, the probes for my rack thermostats aren't IN the bins. But if you have to have the temp probe wire in there, then you may as well pair it with the stat probe.

I had a problem with my tstat probe in my rack. I had the tstat set to 88, but the temp (which was in the tub) read 100+ So I kept decreasing my tstat temps till I hit 78 and it finally ran 86.. then it went back to 98! I ended up drilling a hole in the back of one of the tubs and putting the probe in there. I'm not sure you'd encounter the same issue with a tank.. but I agree with Nanci, you'll already have the thermometer probe there, one more won't hurt.
