Interesting Bloodred...

So this is my yearling male Bloodred from SMR. He is a slow grower, the female I got at the same time as him is about double his size.

He has always been a bit different in the way he looks as well. I'm going to post up some pics, not great ones as they were taken with a zoom lens, and he is really active tonight for some reason, probably because he's in hunting mode and will be getting some mice tomorrow :)

Tell me what you think this is...

Oh and one of my female Anery bloodreds face, she kept watching to see what I was up to, and she's too adorable not to shoot!

Well the camera is using flash, and it's REALLY washed out his color. He's not a red bloodred though, more of an orange-red.

It was not purchased as a pied-side. When I think pied side, I always think of that one pic that Don @ SMR has of his pied-side that is solid white half way up his body. However, after seeing several pied side from Bayou, I no longer am sure where to draw the line.

I should add, when reading the description in the Cornsnake Morph Guide regarding the pied side it says:

"...The second effect is a severe "cutoff" of the patterning on the dorsal/lateral line. At this line, the pattern of pied-side corns simply disappears and is replaces with a strong wash of non-patterned reds."

That describes him quite accurately.

I am not sure however if you can consider the amount of white that comes up his side as enough to qualify. He has more white along the side of his body that creeps up, but no higher then what is around his head. Nothing like the male of Don's.

To be honest I have not had much interest in pied sides, as when I first saw the $2000 price tag I said to myself, I will look at it when it says $200!

Umm...just wondering, I'm not a bloodred expert... But could he be a Hypo Bloodred...?
Or maybe het. Hypo or Amel which might cause that ligher coloring?

The coloring looks a bit light and orange-reddish to me, although I know bloodred varies a lot from lighter red to even brownish.

Or is it just the flash?

Well it depends on your monitor as well. My monitor has some color enhancemnt stuff and it looks pretty good, but on my laptop, he looks pretty much light and almost brown. My hand looks about 3times a light as it is as well. That is kinda common washout with flash, but I am more interested in the white on him, then the odd color. He is most certainly not going to be the color of dried blood like standard bloodreds are.

For me thats a regular Blood, no pied sided.

The White Scales on the head is imho just natural variation.

I saw some Bloods mit heads like that which are definitly no pied.

That is a very nice blood, for my money Don has some of the best. Most bloods have that white under the chin but pied refers to from irregular splotches of white to white that covers most of the sides. I don't have any pics here at work but when I get home I will post a pic.

From what I always understood, there was a large amount of white on Pied Sides, like the one Don has, white half way up. However, someone living near me got some pied sides from Bayou, and they have about the same amount of white that this snake has.

So now I am not sure how much white it takes to consider it pied side. I guess it would be genetic and there would be better quality as the white increases, but I have no clue. I would ask Don directly, but he is very busy atm!

Do you still have the clutch # that came on the cup?

No I do not. Sorry! I only keep them for about the first year, till I upgrade thier boxes, and then I toss them. Didn't think it would ever be handy!

Have you considered Mcdonald line pied sided?

As for the how much white to be considered pied sided. Well I know that some have bred two that only have something like one or two white scales!! :)
