Interesting Petsmart trick

Tara and I went looking for coconut hides for the fire corn today. I went to the reptile section and picked up two and Tara said, "Put those back... let's go and look at hermit crab hides."

It was the same freakin' coconut, same brand (T-rex) and yet the hide in the hermit crab section, marked "Crab Hut" was $1 cheaper than the same hide in the reptile section.

Gotta love Petsmart.

oh my bad! Im thinking petCO, not petSMART. sorry! :)

Ah! I can't keep those two straight either. I just remember that the Petsmart near me has had the same striped corn for over a year, and they have a normal labeled as an amel. -_-

I notice that with a few items they sell. It pays to look around.

The way I keep the two differentiated (besides the fact I worked at Petco lol) is that Petsmart = Walmart (bigger, more stuff in bulk) and Petco = Target (smaller and usually cleaner)

Not true here. I loathe our local PetCo and prefer never to shop there.

Here you can define petsmart by going straight to the fish section and seeing a good 50% of the fish in the 'belly-up' position. Which is funny because the Petsmart here refuses to sell either frozen or live mice (for food) because they feel that it is 'unkind' to feed mice to snakes.
I don't know what they think snakes should eat, maybe a carrot?

You know, I think about those coconut hides every time I see coconuts for sale at the grocery store. I always think that you could get two coconut hides PLUS fresh coconut and coconut milk out of them. I don't use coconut hides, but if I needed them, I think I'd go that route. Tasty!

Fresh coconut to me tastes like windex. I need the highly sugared variety.

:roflmao: I am the reverse. Dried coconut tastes like sticks to me and I'm unsure why people eat it in desserts! I don't eat them that often (here), but next time I do, I'll clean them up and send them your way!

Yeah....with rum usually.

Oooo. I hadn't thought of that. Now that spring has spring here, that might be just the excuse to get some fresh coconut. Market research, you know. See if drinks made with fresh coconut milk are better than with canned . . . ;)

I just always remember that Petco has that crazy snack bar of dog treats (is that what they are? I've never actually bought them) in all the different colors/types.

And I am an equal opportunity lover of coconut.

I noticed that also when I was buying the hides...then wound up buying a bunch of hatchlings and bought a bunch of the coconuts online for 79 cents each, which was much better than petsmart (o:

Our local Petsmart takes awesome care of their live animals. They hire people who love working with pets (including reptiles) and handling them.

As for knowing which section to go to for the best price, I looked on their website and found Reptile Aspen bedding at $8 for 8 quarts. Then I looked at Hamster Aspen bedding. $8 for 55 quarts or $12 for 100-ish quarts (8 cubic feet). I know which section I'll be going to when I need bedding.

Eh, I don't have much to add to the coconut hide discussion...I use lengths of PVC pipe for hides (like $5 for a 10ft length of pipe, and I can get anywhere from 15 to 30 or so hides, depending on the diameter...bigger diameter for larger snakes=longer length hide). I use the half logs in my two 'display' tanks.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!!

Btw...I pretty much hate coconut in any form...except oddly macaroons!

When I was in Boston a few weeks ago, I got a macaroon at a local bakery. The thing was nearly the size of my fist and had dark chocolate drizzled over it...I was in heaven!! :)

I saw a Ball Python labeled as a Sand Boa at one of our stores yesterday. Oops!
