I plan on buying a hatchling. I currently have a 29 gal tank. Would this be adequate for the life of the snake or would I need to upgrade to a larger one when he reaches an adult?
A 29 gallon tank would do very well for a cornsnake. You might want to keep it simple while the snake is very small, as the hatchling will be more difficult to find if the tank is decoration heavy.
A general rule of thumb is so long as the snake can stretch out at least 50% of its length. Corn snakes don't climb much, so it is better to have a long tank that it not very tall as apposed to taller tanks which arboreal snakes tend to prefer.
