Is A Hide Box Really Needed?

In a word, YES. A leading cause of health issues for snakes of any species, including corns, is stress. A hide is an essential part of corn snake husbandry. It's right up there with temps and humidity. It will give your snake a place to feel secure and help eliminate stress.

also when i bought him 2 days ago his eyes where a bluish tint already but he dont look pale or nething does this mean hes gonna shed soon if so in how long

A hide box is very important. Some snakes actually stop eating and starve (up to death sometimes) if they feel insecure and have nowhere to hide. PLus stress can cause a whole lot of other diseases.

Not only is a hide box necessary , but if your viv/tank is big enough Id recommend putting one at each end so your snake has a choice of a hot or cool hide.

But if space is limited at least one hide should be used :)

I would always suggest multiple hideboxes, but I do have one snake that when provided with hideboxes never used them anyway. He would just burrow underneath the papertowels. I changed him to deep, loose substrate and no longer use hideboxes for him. He's doing great like this.

While I would agree with Amada's assessment that snakes are individuals and react differently, please keep in mind the beginning of her post, that you should provide multile hideboxes. While some corns may be happy in just substrate, err on the side of caution and provide everything you think he might need, not just a minimum. That is until you know his personality better, then adjust. To reinforce what others have said, stress is a killer, do everything you can to eliminate it from your snake's environment.

I'm a contrarian.......

I will state for the record that I don't use hides. IMO, the answer to this question entirely depends on the type of enclosure you're using and how much activity is going on in the snake's immediate area.

My collection is housed in tubs that naturally act as large hides. They are also in a room that has very little activity or movement going on that could spook the snakes.

If you are using a 50-gallon glass tank (with 5 open sides through which the snake can detect movement) that is in the middle of your living room, then your snake is likely to feel vulnerable and needs a security upgrade.

OK, Mr. Contrarian, I agree that a rack system with tubs is different. But, gotpot implied that this is his only snake. Single pets are not ususally housed in the conditions you describe, so I'll stand by my multiple hides recommendation. Again, I think it's better to err on the side of caution.

Dear Mister Oversensitive,

I was just Yingin' everyone else' s Yang. I didn't say there was anything wrong with hides.............. :duck:

(and put you on my ignore list)

This threat is getting more and more popular...

But, is it really a threat or has it just turned into a large laugh.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I have at least one hide in all my vivs, including the little 5 gal that I have a yearling in right now. I will be working on a rack system this winter, and will be moving snakes into it late winter early spring, but I still think that I will provide at least one hide...even if it is just a water bowl that the snake can crawl under it.

lol...

What can I say? I'm a trendsetter and a legend in my own mind.

Either that, or you just like to shake things up and see what falls out. It has been interesting reading this last month and a half.

Guilty as charged......

And I even managed to stay out of the Ultra thread...... :poke:

That one has surprised me. I have been keeping up with it now and again. Have about 2 pages worth of reading to catch up, but no time today

CAV, would you mind linking a picture to your setup? I'm curious what a tank without hides looks like! lol! ;)
