or does it bother anyone else that all the hides and everything people buy could be made for much cheaper or even for free with just a little bit of ingenuity?
I always find myself roaming through the aisle at the petstore looking at all the neat little hidey holes I could get for my snakes, and each one that I pick up I end up putting down because I refuse to pay for something I could make at home with a piece of wood and a sharp knife or a couple minutes with my dremmel.
Am I crazy? :crazy02:

On the one hand- yeah, you're right. But there are some really pretty hides to be bought, like the Exoterra caves et cetera- just like any other sort of furniture, buying things which are ready-made cost more and most of the time look far better than something you can make at home.

Naturally if you spend -tons- of effort and time into it, you can get better results, but time=money.

yeah, that is a good point... if I do it, I do it right, and it would take longer. Then it's a question of is it worth my time.

There have been a couple threads on here where people make their own hides out of polymer clay and some other type of clay. They were really cool. I also search a per store here as they have boxes of used stuff. I've gotten a few things bring them home soak in bleach and the the dishwasher.

I make most of my hides from tubs or box's :)

Yep - boxes here since I can throw them away. 4" PVC cut in half (and ~12" or more in length) are PERFECT, too. Cheap, easy, tight for the snake, etc. Very easy to clean. It's what we used in the lab since they could go through the cage cleaning machine, too. Perfect!

I only buy my hides now. I tried to make some numerous times before and my snakes would never touch the things. Toilet roll tubes, old tubs, you name it, I tried it. Guess I just didn't get any of them right. :shrugs:

I love looking at home made hides and so on. I think they're great. But as long as snake and owner are happy, I have no idea why it would bother anybody whether a hide is bought or not. ;)
